What Does Remove Extra Spaces Do?
The ToolZippy Remove Extra Spaces tool cleans unnecessary whitespace from plain text. Instead of forcing every type of whitespace into one fixed format, it lets you choose which cleanup operations should be applied.
You can collapse repeated ordinary spaces, convert tabs, trim whitespace from the beginning and end of each line, and optionally remove blank lines.
Before: The quick brown fox. After: The quick brown fox.
Only spacing selected in the cleanup options is changed. Letters, numbers and punctuation are otherwise left untouched.
Understanding the Cleanup Options
Remove Blank Lines
This optional setting removes lines that contain no visible text after the selected whitespace cleanup has been applied.
Leave it disabled when blank lines are intentionally being used to separate paragraphs or sections.
Does It Preserve Paragraphs and Line Breaks?
Yes, unless you enable the option to remove blank lines. Ordinary line breaks are preserved, so cleaning spaces does not automatically combine separate lines or paragraphs.
Before: First paragraph. Second paragraph. After: First paragraph. Second paragraph.
The blank line between the two paragraphs remains because removing blank lines is optional.
A space is not the same thing as a line break. This tool lets you clean repeated horizontal spacing without automatically flattening a multi-line document into one paragraph.
Spaces, Tabs and Line Breaks
Whitespace is a general term for characters used to separate text. Three common forms are ordinary spaces, tab characters and line breaks.
- Space: the ordinary gap usually created by the spacebar.
- Tab: a separate whitespace character often used for indentation or column-like spacing.
- Line break: the character sequence that moves text to a new line.
The controls above treat these separately so you can clean a pasted document without unnecessarily changing its layout.
When Extra Spaces Commonly Appear
Unwanted spacing can appear when text is copied between websites, PDFs, documents, spreadsheets, content-management systems or messaging applications.
Common examples include:
- Several spaces between words after copying formatted content.
- Tabs mixed with spaces in pasted lists.
- Invisible spaces at the beginning or end of lines.
- Blank lines introduced while combining text from several sources.
- Inconsistent spacing in notes, drafts or content prepared for publishing.
A whitespace cleaner can make this type of text easier to reuse without manually finding every unwanted gap.
When You Should Keep Original Spacing
Not every repeated space is accidental. Some plain-text content uses spacing as part of its structure.
Be careful when cleaning:
- Programming or configuration code where indentation matters.
- ASCII art and diagrams.
- Fixed-width text tables.
- Poetry or layouts where spacing is intentional.
- Data formats that rely on whitespace delimiters.
For these cases, review the cleaned result before replacing your original text.
It does not understand the semantic purpose of every space. The selected rules are applied consistently to the text you provide.
How to Remove Extra Spaces
- Paste or type your text into the input box.
- Keep Collapse repeated spaces enabled to reduce multiple spaces to one.
- Enable or disable tab cleanup depending on your text.
- Choose whether spaces at the beginning and end of each line should be removed.
- Enable Remove blank lines only if empty lines are unwanted.
- Click Remove Extra Spaces.
- Review the statistics and cleaned text.
- Copy the result or download it as a plain-text file.
What the Statistics Mean
The tool reports the number of characters before and after cleanup, the net number of characters removed, and the number of lines remaining in the result.
The character-removal figure is a simple before-versus-after difference. If tabs are converted into ordinary spaces, the tool still reports the net change in text length rather than attempting to assign a visual width to each tab.
This matters because a tab does not have one universal on-screen width; its appearance depends on the software or layout displaying it.
Browser Processing and Privacy
The whitespace cleanup on this page is designed to run with JavaScript in your browser. Your text does not need to be sent to a separate text-processing service solely to remove the selected whitespace.
Normal website technologies such as hosting, analytics, security, consent systems or advertising may operate separately according to ToolZippy’s applicable site policies.

Remove Extra Spaces FAQs
What does Remove Extra Spaces do?
It cleans selected whitespace from plain text, including repeated spaces, tabs, line-edge whitespace and, optionally, blank lines.
Will it remove all spaces from my text?
No. The main space-cleaning option reduces repeated ordinary spaces to a single space. It does not remove the normal single spaces separating words.
Does it preserve paragraphs?
Yes. Normal line breaks are preserved. Blank lines are also preserved unless you specifically enable Remove blank lines.
Can it remove spaces at the beginning and end of each line?
Yes. Enable Trim each line to remove spaces and tabs from the beginning and end of individual lines.
What happens to tab characters?
When Convert tabs to spaces is enabled, tab characters are changed to ordinary spaces and can then be normalized by the repeated-space cleanup.
Can I remove empty lines?
Yes. Enable Remove blank lines to remove lines that contain no visible text after whitespace cleanup.
Should I use this tool on programming code?
Use caution. Some programming languages, configuration files and structured text rely on indentation or whitespace, so automatic cleanup may change formatting or meaning.
Can I copy or download the cleaned text?
Yes. After processing, you can copy the result to your clipboard or save it as a plain-text .txt file.
Does the tool change punctuation or capitalization?
No. The cleanup rules on this page target whitespace. They do not intentionally change letters, capitalization, numbers or punctuation.
Is the Remove Extra Spaces tool free?
Yes. You can use the tool without creating an account.
