Online Line Counter
Count total lines, non-empty lines and blank lines in any text. ToolZippy also shows word and character counts instantly while you type or paste.
How the Line Counter Works
ToolZippy’s Line Counter analyzes the line breaks in the text you enter. It separates the text wherever a standard line break occurs and then reports the number of total, non-empty and empty lines.
The statistics update automatically as you type, paste, delete or add new lines, so you do not need to repeatedly submit the text.
How to Count Lines in Text
- Paste or type your text into the box above.
- The statistics update automatically.
- Check the Total Lines value for the complete line count.
- Compare it with Non-Empty Lines and Empty Lines if blank lines matter.
- Use Copy Summary if you want to copy the statistics.
What Counts as a Line?
A new line begins after a line break. For example, this text contains three lines:
Apple Banana Orange
Wrapping caused by the width of the text box does not create additional logical lines. A very long sentence may visually wrap across several rows on your screen while still counting as one line if it contains no line break.
How Are Blank Lines Counted?
A blank line is a line that contains no visible text. ToolZippy also treats a line containing only spaces or tabs as empty.
First line Third line
This distinction can be useful when checking lists, datasets, source text, copied spreadsheet values or documents containing unwanted blank rows.
Does a Final Line Break Add Another Line?
Yes. If text ends with a line-break character, there is an additional empty line after the final break under the counting method used by this tool.
For example, two text lines followed by one final line break are interpreted as two non-empty lines plus one final empty line.
This behavior is intentional. Different editors and command-line utilities can use different conventions for reporting lines, so results from another program may occasionally differ by one when a file ends with a newline.
What Else Does the Tool Count?
In addition to lines, the tool provides two useful supporting statistics:
| Statistic | What ToolZippy Counts | Useful For |
|---|---|---|
| Total Lines | Every logical line, including blank lines. | Lists, code, datasets and structured text. |
| Non-Empty Lines | Lines containing at least one non-whitespace character. | Checking populated rows or entries. |
| Empty Lines | Blank or whitespace-only lines. | Finding unnecessary spacing. |
| Words | Whitespace-separated text tokens. | Quick text-size reference. |
| Characters | Unicode characters, including spaces and line breaks. | General text-length checking. |
Line Count vs Word Count
Line count and word count measure different aspects of text. A single line can contain one word, hundreds of words or no words at all.
Use the Line Counter when the structure of rows or lines matters. For more detailed word statistics, use ToolZippy’s Word Counter.
Useful Reasons to Count Lines
- Check how many entries are in a line-separated list.
- Compare total rows with populated rows.
- Identify blank lines in copied or exported text.
- Review simple datasets before importing them elsewhere.
- Count lines in notes, scripts, configuration snippets or plain-text files.
- Check lists copied from spreadsheets or databases.
- Measure the structure of poems, lyrics or other line-based writing without manually counting rows.
Windows, Mac and Linux Line Breaks
Plain-text files can represent line endings differently. Windows commonly uses a carriage-return plus line-feed sequence, while Unix-like systems generally use a line-feed character.
The ToolZippy Line Counter recognizes common CRLF, LF and CR line endings so pasted text from different systems can be counted consistently.
Browser-Based Text Processing
The counting on this page is designed to run with JavaScript in your browser. The text is analyzed directly by the page’s counting script rather than requiring an account or a manual upload process.
As with any online tool, avoid entering confidential, regulated or highly sensitive information unless its use is permitted by your organization’s data-handling requirements.

Line Counter FAQs
What is a line counter?
A line counter analyzes text and reports how many logical lines it contains. ToolZippy also separates non-empty and empty lines.
How does ToolZippy count lines?
The tool recognizes common CRLF, LF and CR line endings. Text between two line breaks is treated as a logical line.
Does an empty text box count as one line?
No. ToolZippy reports 0 lines when the input contains no characters.
Are blank lines included in the total line count?
Yes. Total Lines includes blank lines. The tool separately shows how many lines are non-empty and how many are empty.
Does a line containing only spaces count as empty?
Yes. A line containing only whitespace such as spaces or tabs is classified as an empty line.
Does text wrapping create extra lines?
No. Visual wrapping caused by the width of the text box does not create another logical line. Only actual line-break characters affect the line count.
Does a line break at the end of the text affect the result?
Yes. Under this tool’s counting method, a final line break creates an additional empty line after the preceding text.
Can the Line Counter handle Windows and Unix line endings?
Yes. It is designed to recognize common CRLF, LF and CR line-ending styles.
Can I count lines on a mobile phone?
Yes. You can paste or type text into the tool on modern phones, tablets and desktop browsers.
Do I need to create an account?
No. The Line Counter is free to use without creating an account.
