Find and Replace Text
Find a word, phrase or text pattern and replace it throughout your content in seconds. Choose whether matching should be case-sensitive, limit matches to whole words, or replace only the first occurrence.
Find & Replace Your Text
Paste or type your content, enter the text you want to find and choose what should replace it.
How to Find and Replace Text Online
ToolZippy’s Find and Replace Text tool is designed for repetitive text editing. Instead of manually locating the same word or phrase throughout a paragraph, article, list or note, you can specify what to search for and what should replace it.
Paste or Type Your Text
Enter the content you want to edit in the Input Text box. The tool shows the current character and approximate word counts below the editor.
Enter What You Want to Find
In the Find field, type the exact word, phrase, punctuation sequence or other plain-text string you want the tool to locate.
Enter the Replacement
Type the new text in the Replace With field. You can also leave this field empty if your intention is to remove the matched text.
Choose Your Matching Options
Enable Case sensitive when uppercase and lowercase letters should be treated differently. Enable Whole words only when the search term should not be replaced when it appears inside a longer word.
Replace One or Every Match
Choose Replace First to change only the first matching occurrence, or choose Replace All to update every matching occurrence in the text.
Find and Replace Example
Suppose you have written the following sentence but want to change every instance of the word colour to color.
The tool searches the original text for the specified term and creates a new result containing the replacement. The original input remains available in the input box so you can change your settings and run the operation again.
Understanding the Replacement Options
When enabled, uppercase and lowercase letters must match exactly. For example, “Apple” and “apple” are treated as different text.
Limits matching to standalone words. Searching for “cat”, for example, will not intentionally target the “cat” portion inside “catalog”.
Changes only the first matching occurrence while leaving later matches unchanged.
Replace All
The Replace All option processes every match found using the selected case and whole-word settings. This is useful when a term appears repeatedly throughout a larger block of text.
When Is Find and Replace Useful?
Find-and-replace editing is useful whenever the same change needs to be made repeatedly across plain text.
- Correcting a repeated spelling mistake throughout an article.
- Changing a person’s, company or product name in draft content.
- Updating terminology across notes or documentation.
- Changing repeated abbreviations into full words.
- Removing an unwanted word or text pattern by leaving the replacement field empty.
- Standardizing repeated wording before publishing website content.
- Updating repeated labels in plain-text lists.
- Editing study notes, emails or content drafts more quickly.
Exact Text, Case and Whole-Word Matching
Case-Insensitive Matching
By default, the tool ignores letter case when finding text. A search for hello, for example, can match “hello”, “Hello” and “HELLO”. The replacement text is inserted exactly as you type it.
Case-Sensitive Matching
When Case sensitive is enabled, the capitalization must match. Searching for “Tool” will not match “tool”.
Whole Words Only
Whole-word mode is useful when the search text is a word and you do not want the same letters replaced inside longer words.
For example, searching for car with whole-word mode enabled can match “car” while avoiding a partial match inside a word such as “carpet”.
Note: Whole-word matching uses JavaScript word boundaries. Languages and text containing unusual punctuation or non-Latin writing systems can have different word-boundary behavior. Review the result before using it in important content.
What This Tool Does and Does Not Do
This is a plain-text find and replace tool. It searches for the text you enter and performs replacement based on the selected options.
- It does not interpret regular expressions entered by the user.
- It does not automatically correct spelling or grammar.
- It does not understand the meaning or context of a word.
- It does not preserve rich-text formatting such as fonts, colors or document styles because the editor works with plain text.
- Replacement text is inserted literally rather than generated automatically.
For text length analysis, use the Word Counter or Character Counter. For capitalization changes, use the Case Converter.
Privacy and Browser-Based Processing
The find-and-replace operation on this page is designed to run with JavaScript in your browser. The text is processed by the page code to produce the replacement result.
Even with browser-based utilities, use appropriate caution with sensitive information. Do not paste confidential, personal, regulated or proprietary information into an online tool unless that use is permitted by the applicable privacy and data-handling requirements.
