Text statistics
All figures are calculated from the text in your editor.
What does the Character Counter measure?
ToolZippy measures more than the total number of characters. It also helps you understand the length and structure of a text draft, from a short caption to a longer document.
Compare all characters with a second count that excludes whitespace.
See how many groups of non-whitespace text are present.
Review lines, approximate sentences and paragraphs.

Characters with spaces vs without spaces
Some writing limits include spaces, while others exclude them. This counter shows both measurements, helping you check the requirement that applies to your text.
11 characters including the space; 10 characters without whitespace.
Numbers and punctuation count as characters. The “without whitespace” statistic removes spaces, tabs and line breaks, not just ordinary spaces.
How the statistics are calculated
Characters
The main count uses JavaScript string length, which measures UTF-16 code units. Some emoji and combined Unicode characters may count as more than one unit, so results can differ from platforms that count visual characters.
Words and lines
Words are estimated by splitting non-empty text at whitespace. Lines are separated by line breaks; empty input reports zero lines.
Sentences and paragraphs
Sentence counts are approximations based on common punctuation such as periods, question marks and exclamation marks. Paragraphs are estimated from text blocks separated by blank lines. Writing conventions vary, so these figures may differ from a word processor.
Where a character counter is useful
Use a character counter to review online form entries, social media captions, product descriptions, article headings, metadata drafts, academic notes and application responses. Character limits differ across platforms, so always check the destination platform’s own rules before submitting.
Privacy note: Counting is performed by JavaScript in your browser. Avoid entering confidential or regulated text into online tools unless it complies with your data-handling policies.
