Calorie Calculator

Use the calculator below to estimate basal metabolic rate (BMR), maintenance calories and a simple daily calorie target.

Estimated Daily Target —

Enter your details to calculate an estimate.

What Does the Calorie Calculator Estimate?

The calculator uses your basic measurements to estimate BMR, then applies an activity factor to estimate total daily energy expenditure (TDEE). Your selected planning adjustment is then applied to the estimated maintenance calories.

BMR An estimate of energy used by the body at rest.
Maintenance Estimated daily energy expenditure after applying an activity factor.
Goal Target Maintenance calories plus or minus the planning adjustment you select.

How to Use the Calorie Calculator

  1. Select the sex used by the BMR equation.
  2. Enter your age in years.
  3. Enter your weight in kilograms.
  4. Enter your height in centimeters.
  5. Select the activity level that most closely represents your usual routine.
  6. Select a maintenance, deficit or surplus planning option.
  7. Choose Calculate Calories.

The result will show your estimated BMR, estimated maintenance calories and the calorie target produced by the selected adjustment.

How the Calorie Calculation Works

This calculator first estimates basal metabolic rate using the Mifflin–St Jeor equation.

Male BMR BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) − (5 × age) + 5
Female BMR BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) − (5 × age) − 161

The estimated BMR is multiplied by the selected activity factor to produce an estimate of total daily energy expenditure.

Estimated Maintenance Calories TDEE = Estimated BMR × Activity Factor

Finally, the selected calorie adjustment is added to or subtracted from estimated TDEE.

Planning Target Target Calories = Estimated TDEE + Selected Adjustment

Understanding Activity Levels

Activity multipliers are simplified estimates. Choose the option that best reflects your typical routine rather than an unusually active or inactive day.

Sedentary Mostly seated daily activity with little structured exercise.
Moderately Active Regular moderate exercise during the week.
Very Active Frequent hard exercise or a consistently active routine.

Real energy expenditure can differ substantially between people even when the same activity category is selected.

Maintenance, Deficit and Surplus Calories

Maintenance calories

Estimated maintenance calories represent the approximate daily energy intake corresponding to the TDEE estimate. Actual weight maintenance can differ from the calculated value.

Calorie deficit

A deficit means the selected planning target is below estimated maintenance calories. This calculator offers simple 250 and 500 kcal/day adjustments for comparison; these are not personalized diet prescriptions.

Calorie surplus

A surplus means the planning target is above estimated maintenance calories. The calculator provides 250 and 500 kcal/day options to illustrate how different planning adjustments change the result.

Why Your Actual Calorie Needs Can Differ

No online calorie formula can measure an individual’s exact daily energy expenditure. Actual needs can vary because of factors such as:

  • Body composition and muscle mass.
  • Daily movement outside structured exercise.
  • Exercise type, intensity and duration.
  • Age and individual physiology.
  • Changes in body weight over time.
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Health conditions and medications.
  • Errors when estimating activity level.

The calculated number is therefore best viewed as an estimate, not a guaranteed calorie requirement.

Calorie Calculator vs BMR and TDEE Calculators

These tools are related but answer different questions.

BMR Calculator Estimates baseline energy needs before normal daily activity.
TDEE Calculator Applies an activity factor to estimate total daily energy expenditure.
Calorie Calculator Uses estimated TDEE and a selected adjustment to show a planning target.

You can use the dedicated BMR Calculator or TDEE Calculator if you want to focus specifically on either of those calculations.

Why Use ToolZippy’s Calorie Calculator?

ToolZippy’s Calorie Calculator combines the BMR, activity and planning steps in one page, so you do not need to calculate TDEE separately before estimating a calorie target.

Calorie Calculator FAQs

What does this calorie calculator estimate?

It estimates BMR using the Mifflin–St Jeor equation, applies the selected activity factor to estimate TDEE, and then applies the selected calorie adjustment.

Are maintenance calories exact?

No. Maintenance calories are estimates. Actual daily energy expenditure can differ because of body composition, activity, physiology and other factors.

What is the difference between BMR and TDEE?

BMR estimates baseline energy use at rest. TDEE attempts to estimate total daily energy expenditure after accounting for activity.

Which activity level should I choose?

Choose the category that most closely represents your usual routine. Activity multipliers are approximate, so selecting a category can still overestimate or underestimate actual energy expenditure.

Can I use the calculator for weight loss?

It can illustrate how a selected calorie deficit changes an estimated daily target, but it does not provide an individualized weight-loss or nutrition prescription.

Can I use it for weight gain?

The surplus options can show a simple planning estimate above maintenance calories. Individual nutrition needs and responses vary.

Is the Calorie Calculator free?

Yes. ToolZippy provides the calculator without requiring an account.
