Remove Duplicate Lines
Clean repeated lines from lists, notes, copied data and other plain text while keeping the first occurrence. Choose how duplicates are compared and see exactly how many lines were removed.
Clean Repeated Lines
Paste one item or text entry per line. The first matching line is kept and later duplicates are removed according to the comparison mode you select.
What Does Remove Duplicate Lines Do?
The ToolZippy Remove Duplicate Lines tool scans your text line by line and keeps the first occurrence of each matching line. When the same line appears again later, that later occurrence is removed.
This is useful when a list contains repeated names, keywords, URLs, codes, tags, email-like entries, product identifiers or other line-based data.
Input: Apple Banana Apple Orange Banana Output: Apple Banana Orange
The order is preserved. The tool does not alphabetically sort the text unless you separately use an ordering tool.
Choose How Duplicates Are Detected
Not every repeated-looking line is technically identical. ToolZippy therefore provides several comparison modes.
Ignore Case and Spaces
The combined mode ignores both letter case and surrounding whitespace. For example, “ Apple ” and “apple” are treated as duplicate lines.
Comparison settings change how matches are detected. They do not rewrite the line that is kept. If the first occurrence is “Apple”, that original version remains in the output.
Does the Tool Preserve Line Order?
Yes. Lines remain in the same relative order as their first appearance in the input.
Suppose your original list is:
red blue green red yellow blue
After duplicate removal, the result is:
red blue green yellow
The tool removes the second occurrence of “red” and “blue” without rearranging the remaining lines.
If you actually want to sort the resulting list, use ToolZippy’s Alphabetical Order Tool after removing duplicates.
Empty and Blank Lines
By default, blank lines participate in duplicate checking just like other lines. That means the first blank line may remain while repeated blank lines are removed.
Enable Remove empty lines when you want all blank or whitespace-only lines removed from the output.
This can be useful when copied text contains unnecessary spacing between entries.
Useful Ways to Remove Duplicate Lines
- Keyword lists: remove repeated search terms or topic ideas.
- URL lists: clean exact repeated URLs before reviewing a list.
- Product codes: remove duplicate identifiers from line-based data.
- Study notes: clean repeated headings or copied note entries.
- Content planning: remove repeated titles, tags or ideas.
- Copied spreadsheet data: clean a single pasted column when each value is on its own line.
- Lists of names: identify repeated text entries while preserving the first version.
This is a plain-text cleanup tool. It does not validate whether URLs, codes, names or other values are factually correct.
Exact Duplicates vs Similar Text
The tool removes lines according to deterministic text matching. It does not use semantic or AI-based similarity detection.
For example, the lines “Buy blue shoes” and “Purchase blue shoes” express similar ideas, but they are not duplicates because the text itself is different.
Likewise, punctuation remains significant. In exact-match mode, “Hello” and “Hello!” are different lines.
The tool identifies duplicate text according to the selected comparison rule. It does not decide whether two differently written lines mean the same thing.
How to Use the Duplicate Line Remover
- Paste or type your text into the input box.
- Put separate entries on separate lines.
- Select the duplicate comparison method.
- Choose whether blank lines should be removed.
- Click Remove Duplicate Lines.
- Review the input, removed and output line counts.
- Copy the cleaned result or download it as a text file.
For additional cleanup after deduplication, you can use the Text Cleaner, Find and Replace, or Alphabetical Order Tool.

Remove Duplicate Lines FAQs
What does Remove Duplicate Lines do?
It keeps the first occurrence of a matching line and removes later occurrences according to the comparison mode you select.
Does the tool preserve the original order?
Yes. Unique lines remain in the order of their first appearance. The tool does not automatically sort them.
Can I ignore uppercase and lowercase differences?
Yes. Choose the Ignore uppercase / lowercase option to treat lines such as “APPLE”, “Apple” and “apple” as matches.
Can the tool ignore extra spaces?
Yes. The Ignore surrounding spaces mode trims whitespace from the beginning and end for comparison while preserving the original first line in the output.
Can I remove empty lines too?
Yes. Enable Remove empty lines to exclude blank and whitespace-only lines from the result.
Does it remove similar sentences?
No. The tool compares text according to the selected rule. It does not use semantic similarity to decide whether differently written sentences mean the same thing.
Does punctuation affect duplicate detection?
Yes. Unless every other character is also identical under the selected comparison mode, “Hello” and “Hello!” are treated as different lines.
Can I download the cleaned text?
Yes. After processing the text, use the Download .txt button to save the cleaned result as a plain-text file.
Is the Remove Duplicate Lines tool free?
Yes. The tool can be used without creating an account.
Does the duplicate removal happen in my browser?
The duplicate-removal operation is designed to run through JavaScript in your browser rather than requiring a separate text-processing service for the calculation itself.
