How to Add Line Numbers to Text
Adding line numbers helps organize text so individual lines can be identified, discussed, and referenced. ToolZippy automatically inserts sequential numbers before the lines in your text, eliminating the need to number each line manually.
What Is a Line Numbering Tool?
A line numbering tool adds a sequential numeric prefix to each line of text. For example, a list of tasks can be converted into a numbered list without manually typing the numbers.
Prepare report Review documents Send email Update records
1. Prepare report 2. Review documents 3. Send email 4. Update records
This is useful when preparing instructions, reviewing documents, organizing meeting notes, formatting transcripts, or creating references to individual lines of text.
Customize the Starting Number
By default, the numbering starts at 1. However, you can enter a different starting number to continue an existing list or organize separate sections of a document.
For example, if a previous section ends at line 20, set the starting number to 21. The next lines will begin with 21, 22, 23, and so on.
Available Line Numbering Styles
Different tasks may require different numbering formats. ToolZippy provides six plain-text styles.
1. Example
Suitable for instructions and ordinary numbered lists.
1) Example
A compact style for questions and notes.
1: Example
Useful for labeling text or records.

1 - Example
Provides more space between the number and text.

Minimal formatting without punctuation.
What Is Zero Padding?
Zero padding adds leading zeros to numbers so they have a consistent minimum number of digits. It is particularly useful for transcripts, logs, technical notes, and longer numbered lists.
1. First line 2. Second line 3. Third line
001. First line 002. Second line 003. Third line
The available settings are no padding, two digits, three digits, and four digits. If the line number becomes longer than the selected width, it is displayed in full rather than shortened.
Should You Number Blank Lines?
The Number Blank Lines setting controls whether empty lines receive numbers.
- Enabled: Every physical line, including blank lines, receives a number.
- Disabled: Blank lines remain unnumbered and do not advance the numbering sequence.
For document reviews and technical references, numbering every physical line can make line positions easier to identify. For task lists, skipping blank lines often produces a cleaner result.
Trim Each Line: When Should You Use It?
The Trim Each Line option removes whitespace from the beginning and end of each line. It does not remove spaces between words.
This can help when text has been copied from documents, spreadsheets, or other sources containing inconsistent indentation.
If you are numbering source code, formatted scripts, or text where indentation matters, leave trimming disabled to preserve the original spacing.
Practical Uses for Line Numbers
- Document review: Reference specific lines when suggesting edits or corrections.
- Meeting notes: Number decisions, action items, and follow-up points.
- Transcripts: Identify lines during proofreading or discussion.
- Technical documentation: Create line references for logs and procedures.
- Study materials: Organize questions, notes, and revision points.
- Task lists: Convert unnumbered action items into a clear sequence.
Line Numbers vs Automatic Numbered Lists
ToolZippy adds actual numeric characters to plain text. This differs from automatic numbering in Microsoft Word or other rich-text editors.
When you copy or download the result, the numbers remain part of the text. However, if you later insert or remove a line, the remaining numbers will not update automatically.
To create a fresh sequence, use the original unnumbered text or remove existing number prefixes before generating new numbers.
Copy and Download Numbered Text
Once your text is numbered, use the Copy Text button to copy the result to your clipboard. You can paste it into a document, email, text editor, or another application.
The Download TXT button saves the numbered output as a plain-text file. A TXT file preserves the characters and line breaks but does not preserve rich formatting such as font styles, colors, or automatic list objects.
Browser-Based Processing and Privacy
The Add Line Numbers tool uses browser-side JavaScript to process the text you enter. The numbering operation does not require uploading your text to a processing server.
As with any website, additional services such as analytics or advertising may operate separately. Avoid entering sensitive information unless doing so complies with your organization’s data-handling requirements.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I add line numbers to text online?
Paste your text into the editor, choose your numbering settings, and click Add Line Numbers. The numbered result will appear below the editor.
Can I start numbering from a number other than 1?
Yes. Change the Starting Number field. For example, enter 25 to begin numbering at 25.
Can I add 01, 02, and 03 instead of 1, 2, and 3?
Yes. Select two-digit zero padding. Three-digit and four-digit options are also available.
Can I skip empty lines?
Yes. Turn off Number Blank Lines. Empty lines will remain unnumbered and will not increase the numbering sequence.
Does the tool change the original text?
It adds numeric prefixes to the generated output. Your input remains available in the editor. If you enable trimming, leading and trailing whitespace is removed from the output lines.
Can I number hundreds of lines?
Yes. The tool can process multiline plain text. Performance depends on the size of the input and your device or browser.
Can I copy the numbered result?
Yes. Click Copy Text after generating your numbered output.
Can I download the result as a TXT file?
Yes. Click Download TXT to save the generated plain-text result.
Will numbers update automatically if I edit the downloaded file?
No. The numbers are literal text characters. If you change the number of lines later, generate a new numbered version.
Is the Add Line Numbers tool free?
Yes. The tool is free to use and does not require creating an account.
