Speed Distance Time Calculator
Calculate speed, distance or travel time with automatic unit conversion. Choose what you want to solve, enter the other two values, and get the result in your preferred unit.
Calculate Speed, Distance or Time
Select what you want to calculate. The calculator converts the entered units internally before solving the formula.
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO CALCULATE?120 km ÷ 2 hours = 60 km/h.
Speed, Distance and Time Formulas
Speed, distance and time are connected by a simple relationship. If you know any two of the values, you can calculate the third.
The letters simply represent S = speed, D = distance and T = time. The important part is making sure the units are compatible.
How to Use the Calculator
- Select Speed, Distance or Time.
- Enter the two values you already know.
- Select the unit beside each value.
- Choose the unit you want for the answer.
- Press Calculate.
Unlike a calculator that requires all inputs to use matching units, this version converts supported units internally. For example, you can enter distance in miles and time in minutes, then request the answer in km/h.
Example: Calculate Speed
Suppose a vehicle travels 120 km in 2 hours. Speed is distance divided by time:
120 km ÷ 2 hours = 60 km/h.
The same speed is approximately 37.28 mph or 16.67 m/s. The calculator can display these conversions automatically.
Example: Calculate Distance
If a car maintains an average speed of 60 km/h for 2 hours, distance is calculated by multiplying speed by time:
60 km/h × 2 hours = 120 km.
This formula is useful for estimating how far something travels when its average speed and elapsed time are known.
Example: Calculate Travel Time
If the distance is 120 km and the average speed is 60 km/h, divide distance by speed:
120 km ÷ 60 km/h = 2 hours.
This gives the mathematical travel time at a constant average speed. Actual journey time can be longer because of traffic, stops, route conditions, speed limits and other delays.
Average Speed vs Instantaneous Speed
This calculator determines average speed from total distance and total elapsed time. Average speed describes the overall rate of travel across the period entered.
It is different from instantaneous speed, which is the speed at one specific moment. A vehicle might travel at several different speeds during a journey but still have one average speed for the complete trip.
For example, covering 120 km in 2 hours produces an average speed of 60 km/h even if the vehicle did not travel at exactly 60 km/h throughout the entire journey.
Supported Units and Conversions
The calculator uses meters and seconds internally and converts the result to your selected output unit.
Useful conversion relationships
- 1 kilometer = 1,000 meters.
- 1 mile = 1,609.344 meters.
- 1 foot = 0.3048 meters.
- 1 hour = 3,600 seconds.
- 1 minute = 60 seconds.
- 1 m/s = 3.6 km/h.
- 1 mph = 1.609344 km/h.
When Is a Speed Distance Time Calculator Useful?
The three formulas are useful anywhere distance, elapsed time and average speed need to be related. Common examples include:
- checking a basic road-trip estimate;
- school mathematics and introductory physics exercises;
- cycling or running calculations;
- delivery and journey estimates;
- comparing distances traveled at different average speeds;
- converting between metric and imperial speed units.
The calculated time assumes the entered average speed applies across the whole distance. It does not account for traffic, breaks, acceleration, weather, route restrictions or other real-world delays.
Speed Distance Time Calculator FAQs
What is the formula for speed?
Speed equals distance divided by time: S = D ÷ T.
How do I calculate distance?
Multiply speed by time: D = S × T. Make sure the units are compatible, or use the calculator’s automatic unit conversion.
How do I calculate travel time?
Divide distance by speed: T = D ÷ S. The result represents mathematical travel time based on the average speed entered.
Can I calculate mph from miles and minutes?
Yes. Enter distance in miles, time in minutes and choose mph as the result unit. The calculator converts the time automatically.
Can I convert km/h to mph?
When calculating speed, the results section also shows common equivalent speed values including km/h, mph and m/s.
What is average speed?
Average speed is total distance divided by total elapsed time. It does not necessarily represent the speed at every moment during the journey.
Can I use meters and seconds?
Yes. Distance can be entered in meters and time in seconds, and speed can be returned in m/s or another supported unit.
Does calculated travel time include stops?
Only if the speed and time values you enter already account for them. The basic formula itself does not separately model traffic, rest stops or other delays.
Can I use this calculator for running or cycling?
Yes, for basic speed, distance and elapsed-time calculations. For running pace expressed as minutes per kilometer or mile, use ToolZippy’s dedicated Running Pace Calculator.
Is the Speed Distance Time Calculator free?
Yes. The calculator is free to use and does not require an account.
