What Is Running Pace?
Running pace describes how much time you take to cover a unit of distance. It is commonly expressed as minutes per kilometer or minutes per mile.
For example, a pace of 5:30 min/km means that, on average, each kilometer takes 5 minutes and 30 seconds.
Pace = Total running time ÷ Distance
Pace is different from speed. Pace tells you the time required for each unit of distance, while speed tells you how much distance you cover in a unit of time.
How the Running Pace Calculator Works
The calculator first converts your entered duration into seconds and your distance into a common distance unit. It can then calculate pace and convert the result between kilometers and miles.
Total seconds ÷ Distance in kilometers
Distance ÷ Time in hours
The calculator also uses your calculated average pace to show what your finish time would be at 5 km, 10 km, half-marathon and marathon distances if exactly the same average pace were maintained.
5K, 10K, Half Marathon and Marathon Distances
The preset buttons let you quickly load several common running distances:
- 5K: 5 kilometers
- 10K: 10 kilometers
- Half marathon: 21.0975 kilometers
- Marathon: 42.195 kilometers
You can also enter any custom distance, such as 3 km, 8 km, 15 km or a distance measured in miles.
Understanding the Split Table
A split is the cumulative time at a particular point in a run. When kilometers are selected, this calculator displays kilometer-by-kilometer splits. When miles are selected, it displays mile splits.
For example, if your average pace is exactly 6:00 min/km, the cumulative time at 1 km is 6:00, at 2 km it is 12:00, and at 5 km it is 30:00.
The final row also includes the exact entered distance when it does not end on a whole kilometer or mile.
They assume the same average pace throughout the run. Real running splits often vary because of hills, wind, fatigue, turns, hydration stops, race strategy and other conditions.
Minutes per Kilometer vs Minutes per Mile
Runners in metric-based regions commonly use minutes per kilometer, while minutes per mile is widely used in countries and running communities that use miles.
One mile is approximately 1.609344 kilometers. Because a mile is longer than a kilometer, the numeric minutes-per-mile pace will be higher than the minutes-per-kilometer pace for the same running speed.
The calculator displays both automatically, so you do not need to manually convert between the two systems.
Running Pace vs Average Speed
Pace and speed describe the same overall movement in different ways.
- Pace: how long one kilometer or mile takes.
- Speed: how many kilometers or miles are covered per hour.
For running, pace is often convenient because it makes target splits easy to understand. Average speed can be useful when comparing running with cycling, treadmill settings or other distance-based activities.
How to Use Pace for a Target Finish Time
If you already know your target finish time, divide that target time by the race distance to find the average pace needed.
30-minute 5K ÷ 5 km = 6:00 min/km
A runner targeting 30:00 for 5 km would therefore need an average pace of 6 minutes per kilometer, assuming an evenly paced run.
Likewise, a 60-minute 10K corresponds to an average pace of 6:00 min/km.
About the Race-Time Projections
The projected finish times shown by this tool are simple mathematical same-pace projections. They multiply your calculated average pace by another race distance.
They should not be interpreted as predictions of what you will actually run at another distance. Maintaining a pace for 5 km does not mean the same runner can necessarily maintain it for a half marathon or marathon.
Endurance, training, terrain, weather, elevation, fueling, fatigue and race conditions can all affect performance over longer or shorter distances.
A 5K pace multiplied by 42.195 km is a mathematical same-pace time, not a physiological marathon-performance prediction.
GPS and Treadmill Pace Differences
A calculated pace is only as accurate as the distance and time entered. GPS watches and phone apps can measure slightly different distances because of satellite accuracy, buildings, tree cover, route smoothing and how the device records turns.
Treadmill distance and speed can also differ from outdoor measurements depending on machine calibration. For this reason, small differences between this calculator and a watch, app or treadmill do not necessarily mean that either value is mathematically wrong.
Browser-Based Calculation
This calculator is designed to perform the pace calculations on the page using browser-side JavaScript. The values you enter are used to calculate the displayed results.

Running and Health Considerations
Pace is a mathematical measurement of distance and time. It does not determine whether a particular running speed, distance or training plan is safe or appropriate for an individual.
This calculator is not medical advice or an exercise prescription. Health conditions, injury history, heat, hydration, medications, pregnancy and individual fitness can affect safe exercise. Seek appropriately qualified guidance when needed.
Running Pace Calculator FAQs
How do I calculate my running pace?
Divide your total running time by the distance covered. For example, 30 minutes divided by 5 km equals an average pace of 6:00 min/km.
What does min/km mean?
Minutes per kilometer tells you how many minutes and seconds you take, on average, to cover one kilometer.
What does min/mile mean?
Minutes per mile tells you the average time required to cover one mile.
Can I enter distance in miles?
Yes. Select miles beside the distance field. The calculator will still show both pace per mile and pace per kilometer.
How long is a half marathon?
A half marathon is 21.0975 kilometers, which is approximately 13.1094 miles.
How long is a marathon?
A marathon is 42.195 kilometers, which is approximately 26.2188 miles.
What are running splits?
Splits show your cumulative time at specific distances. This calculator generates even-pace kilometer or mile splits from your calculated average pace.
Are the race finish times predictions?
No. They are same-pace mathematical projections. They show what the finish time would be if the calculated average pace were maintained over another distance.
Why is my GPS watch pace slightly different?
Differences can occur because GPS devices and apps may measure distance differently due to satellite accuracy, route smoothing, buildings, trees and other conditions.
Is this running pace calculator free?
Yes. ToolZippy provides the calculator for free use without requiring an account.
