📘 What Is Pace?

Pace describes how much time it takes to cover a unit of distance. Runners and walkers commonly express pace as minutes per kilometer (min/km) or minutes per mile (min/mi).

A lower time per kilometer or mile represents a faster average pace. For example, 5:00 min/km is faster than 6:00 min/km because each kilometer takes one minute less.

🧮 Pace Formula

BASIC PACE FORMULA Pace = Total Time ÷ Distance

The time and distance must refer to the same activity or segment.

ToolZippy converts the entered distance into both kilometers and miles, allowing the same activity to be shown as pace per kilometer and pace per mile.

✓ Example: 5 km in 30 Minutes

If you cover 5 kilometers in 30 minutes:

WORKED EXAMPLE 30 minutes ÷ 5 km = 6 minutes per km

Your average pace is therefore 6:00 min/km.

The equivalent mile pace is approximately 9:39 min/mile, and the average speed is 10 km/h.

5 KM IN 25 MIN 5:00 min/km
5 KM IN 30 MIN 6:00 min/km
10 KM IN 60 MIN 6:00 min/km

⚡ Pace vs Speed

Pace and speed describe the same movement in different ways. Pace tells you the time required per unit of distance, while speed tells you the distance covered per unit of time.

AVERAGE SPEED Speed = Distance ÷ Time

For example, maintaining a 6:00 min/km average pace corresponds to an average speed of 10 km/h.

🌍 Kilometer Pace and Mile Pace

You do not need to perform a separate calculation when comparing kilometer and mile pace. This calculator converts the entered distance using:

DISTANCE RELATIONSHIP 1 mile = 1.609344 kilometers

Because a mile is longer than a kilometer, the numerical minutes-per-mile value will normally be higher than the minutes-per-kilometer value for the same speed.

🏁 How Race-Time Projections Work

The results include projected times for common distances such as 5K, 10K, half marathon and marathon. These are calculated by extending your current average pace across the selected distance.

SAME-PACE PROJECTION Projected Time = Average Pace × Target Distance
These are mathematical projections, not performance predictions.

Maintaining exactly the same pace over a longer or shorter distance may not be realistic. Terrain, weather, fatigue, elevation, stops and individual endurance can all affect actual finish time.

📍 Average Pace vs Instantaneous Pace

This calculator determines average pace across the complete distance and time you enter. It does not measure how your pace changed during different parts of the activity.

For example, a runner may complete some kilometers quickly and others slowly while still averaging 6:00 min/km overall.

⛰️ Why Real-World Pace Can Vary

Average pace can be affected by hills, trail surfaces, wind, temperature, traffic crossings, rest stops and GPS measurement differences. A calculated average is therefore a summary of the distance and elapsed time entered rather than a description of every part of an activity.

📝 How to Use the Pace Calculator

  1. Enter the distance you covered.
  2. Select kilometers or miles.
  3. Enter your total hours, minutes and seconds.
  4. Select Calculate Pace.
  5. Review your pace per kilometer and per mile.
  6. Compare the corresponding average speed in km/h and mph.
  7. Use the finish-time table to see same-pace projections for common distances.

The calculator accepts decimal distances, so values such as 3.5 km, 6.2 miles or 21.0975 km can be entered directly.

❓ Pace Calculator FAQs

How do I calculate running pace?

Divide the total time by the distance covered. For example, 30 minutes divided by 5 kilometers gives an average pace of 6:00 minutes per kilometer.

What does min/km mean?

Min/km means minutes per kilometer. A pace of 5:30 min/km means each kilometer takes an average of five minutes and thirty seconds.

What does min/mile mean?

Min/mile means minutes per mile. A pace of 8:00 min/mile means each mile takes an average of eight minutes.

What is the difference between pace and speed?

Pace measures time per unit of distance, such as minutes per kilometer. Speed measures distance per unit of time, such as kilometers per hour.

Can I enter distance in miles?

Yes. Select Miles beside the distance field. The calculator will show both mile pace and the equivalent kilometer pace.

Can I use the calculator for walking?

Yes. The calculation only requires distance and elapsed time, so it can calculate average pace for walking as well as running.

Can I use decimal distances?

Yes. Decimal distances such as 2.5 km, 3.1 miles or 21.0975 km are supported.

How are the race finish times calculated?

The tool extends your calculated average pace across each target distance. The results assume the same average pace is maintained throughout and should be treated as mathematical projections rather than performance predictions.

Why might my GPS watch show a different pace?

Differences can result from the distance or elapsed time used, GPS measurement variation, auto-pause settings, rounding or whether moving time rather than total elapsed time is being displayed.

Is the ToolZippy Pace Calculator free?

Yes. The Pace Calculator is free to use and does not require account registration.
