Fuel Cost Calculator
Estimate how much fuel a trip will use and what it may cost. Calculate with kilometers or miles and choose L/100 km, km/L, US MPG or UK MPG for fuel economy.
Calculate Your Trip Fuel Cost
Enter your trip distance, choose the fuel-economy unit used by your vehicle, and enter the fuel price in your preferred currency.
500 km using 40 liters of fuel.
How to Use the Fuel Cost Calculator
The ToolZippy Fuel Cost Calculator estimates how much fuel a journey may require and how much that fuel may cost. It works with both metric and MPG-style fuel economy figures, making it useful for vehicles and fuel-price information from different countries.
Start by entering the distance of your trip. Choose kilometers or miles, then enter the fuel economy figure for your vehicle using the unit you normally see on the dashboard, vehicle specification or fuel-economy record.
Finally, enter the fuel price. You can use a price per liter, per US gallon or per UK gallon. The optional currency label changes only how the cost is displayed—it does not perform currency conversion.
Example: 500 km Trip at 8 L/100 km
Suppose you are planning a 500 km one-way journey and your vehicle uses 8 liters of fuel for every 100 km.
If fuel costs 1.50 per liter:
If you select Round Trip, the calculator doubles the entered one-way distance before calculating fuel use and cost. The same example becomes 1,000 km, 80 liters and a fuel cost of 120.00.
Fuel Cost Formula for L/100 km
L/100 km describes how many liters a vehicle consumes to travel 100 kilometers. A lower L/100 km figure therefore represents lower fuel consumption for the same distance.
Fuel Cost Formula for km/L
Kilometers per liter expresses distance traveled for each liter of fuel. Unlike L/100 km, a higher km/L number represents better fuel economy.
Using US MPG
US MPG tells you how many miles a vehicle travels on one US gallon. When this mode is selected, the calculator converts the trip into miles when necessary and calculates the required number of US gallons.
Using UK MPG
UK or Imperial MPG also measures miles traveled per gallon, but an Imperial gallon is larger than a US gallon. This means a US MPG figure and a UK MPG figure are not directly interchangeable.
Supported Fuel Economy Units
| Unit | What It Means | Better Economy | Typical Calculation |
|---|---|---|---|
| L/100 km | Liters used per 100 km | Lower value | km × L/100 km ÷ 100 |
| km/L | Kilometers traveled per liter | Higher value | km ÷ km/L |
| MPG US | Miles traveled per US gallon | Higher value | miles ÷ US MPG |
| MPG UK | Miles traveled per Imperial gallon | Higher value | miles ÷ UK MPG |
Does the Calculator Require a Particular Currency?
No. Fuel cost is currency-neutral. If the fuel price is 3.00 AED per liter, the result is in AED. If the price is €1.80 per liter, the result is in euros. The same principle applies to dollars, pounds or another currency.
The optional Currency Label field is provided only to make the result easier to read. The calculator does not retrieve exchange rates or convert one currency into another.
Why Actual Fuel Cost Can Differ
The calculator applies the fuel economy you enter consistently over the entire trip. Real driving rarely produces exactly the same fuel consumption under every condition.
Actual consumption can change because of:
- Heavy traffic, repeated acceleration and stop-start driving.
- Long periods of idling.
- Highway speed and aggressive acceleration.
- Vehicle load, passengers, luggage or towing.
- Tyre pressure and tyre condition.
- Air-conditioning and other accessory use.
- Hills, road surface, wind and weather conditions.
- Vehicle maintenance and engine condition.
For budgeting, consider using a slightly less optimistic fuel-economy figure than your best recorded result if the trip will involve heavy traffic, hills or additional vehicle load.
Compare Two Vehicles for the Same Trip
A useful way to compare vehicles is to keep distance and fuel price unchanged and calculate the trip using each vehicle’s fuel economy. For example:
Multiply the 10-liter difference by the current fuel price to estimate the cost difference for that particular journey.
One-Way vs Round-Trip Fuel Cost
If the distance you entered is only from the starting point to the destination, select Round Trip when you plan to drive back over approximately the same distance.
The calculator doubles the entered distance before calculating fuel consumption. If your return route has a different distance, calculate the two journeys separately or enter their combined distance as a one-way calculation.
Common Uses
- Estimate fuel spending before a road trip.
- Plan the approximate cost of a regular commute.
- Compare fuel requirements for two vehicles.
- Estimate driving costs for deliveries or site visits.
- Compare alternative routes with different distances.
- Estimate the fuel portion of a travel budget.
Fuel Cost Calculator vs Fuel Economy Calculator
This calculator starts with a known or estimated fuel-economy figure and uses it to estimate fuel consumption and trip cost.
If you already know how much fuel you used and how far you drove, use the Fuel Economy Calculator to calculate the vehicle’s actual fuel economy instead.
You can also use the Speed, Distance & Time Calculator when planning journey distance, speed or travel time.
Planning note: This calculator provides a mathematical estimate from the values you enter. It does not know current fuel prices, live traffic, your vehicle’s actual consumption or route conditions. Use current local fuel-price information and a realistic fuel-economy figure when planning a real journey.
Fuel Cost Calculator FAQs
How do I calculate fuel cost for a trip?
Estimate the fuel required from trip distance and vehicle fuel economy, then multiply the required fuel by the applicable fuel price. The exact formula depends on whether fuel economy is entered as L/100 km, km/L or MPG.
How much fuel is needed for 500 km at 8 L/100 km?
The calculation is 500 × 8 ÷ 100, which equals 40 liters of fuel. Multiply 40 liters by the fuel price per liter to estimate the cost.
Can I calculate a round trip?
Yes. Enter the one-way distance and select Round Trip. The calculator doubles the entered distance before calculating fuel use and cost.
Does the calculator support miles?
Yes. Distance can be entered in kilometers or miles. The calculator converts internally when the selected fuel-economy unit requires a different distance unit.
Does it support MPG?
Yes. You can calculate with US MPG or UK/Imperial MPG. These are handled separately because a US gallon and an Imperial gallon have different volumes.
What is the difference between US MPG and UK MPG?
Both express miles traveled per gallon, but the gallon sizes are different. One US gallon is about 3.785 liters, while one Imperial gallon is about 4.546 liters, so the MPG values are not directly equivalent.
Can I use AED, dollars, euros or another currency?
Yes. The calculation is currency-neutral. Enter the fuel price in your preferred currency and optionally add a currency label such as AED, $, € or £.
Why might my actual fuel cost be different?
Actual consumption can change with traffic, idling, driving style, speed, vehicle load, tyre pressure, weather, road conditions and other factors. Fuel prices may also change.
Is lower L/100 km better?
Yes. L/100 km measures fuel consumed for every 100 kilometers, so a lower value means less fuel is required for the same distance. For km/L and MPG, higher values indicate better fuel economy.
