Enter a page title, article heading, product name or other text. The slug updates automatically using the options you choose.
What Is a URL Slug?
A URL slug is the part of a web address that commonly identifies a specific page in a readable form.
For example, in:
Slugs are often created from page titles by removing unsupported punctuation, replacing spaces with separators and using a consistent letter case.
How the Slug Generator Works
By default, ToolZippy converts your text to lowercase, transliterates many accented Latin characters to their basic forms, removes unsupported characters and joins the remaining terms with hyphens.
Repeated spaces and punctuation do not create repeated separators. Separators at the beginning or end of the generated slug are also removed.
Hyphens vs Underscores
This generator lets you choose either a hyphen or underscore as the separator between terms.
For normal web page URLs, hyphens are a common readable choice. The underscore option is included for systems or naming conventions where underscores are preferred.
Maximum Slug Length
You can optionally set a maximum number of characters for the generated slug. Enter 0 to leave the slug unrestricted.
When a maximum length is used, the generator tries to stop at a complete term instead of leaving a separator at the end of the slug. If the first term itself exceeds the selected limit, it may be shortened to fit.
Choose a length that remains descriptive enough for your page and works with the URL structure of the website or application where the slug will be used.
Removing Common Stop Words
The optional stop-word setting removes a small list of common English words such as “the,” “a,” “an,” “and,” “of,” “to,” “in” and “for.”
Shorter is not automatically better. Keep important words when removing them would make the slug unclear or change the meaning of the page title.
Accented Characters and Transliteration
The generator uses Unicode normalization to remove many combining accent marks before building the slug. For example, “café” normally becomes “cafe.”
This is not a complete transliteration system for every writing system or language. Characters that cannot be converted into the supported letter-and-number pattern may be removed.
If your website intentionally uses native-script Unicode slugs, this ASCII-oriented generator may not be the appropriate conversion method. Use the URL rules supported by your publishing platform.
What Makes a Useful Slug?
A practical URL slug is usually easy for people to read and closely related to the page it identifies.
- Keep the wording relevant to the page.
- Use a consistent separator.
- Avoid unnecessary punctuation.
- Avoid meaningless strings when a readable name is available.
- Keep important distinguishing terms.
- Do not remove words if doing so changes the intended meaning.
A slug is only one part of a URL and one small part of how a web page is organized. The generator does not evaluate search rankings or guarantee SEO performance.
Changing Existing URL Slugs
Be careful when changing the slug of a page that is already published. Changing the slug normally changes that page’s URL.
Existing bookmarks, internal links and external links may continue pointing to the previous address unless the website handles the change appropriately.
Check your website platform’s URL and redirect settings before changing an established slug. The correct redirect setup depends on the platform and server configuration.
Browser-Based Slug Generation
This tool is designed to generate the slug from the text entered on the page using browser-side JavaScript. No account is required to perform the conversion.
The URL preview is only an example. Selecting a preview domain does not publish a page, check whether a URL exists, or modify any website.
Slug Generator FAQs
What is a slug in a URL?
A slug is the readable part of a URL commonly used to identify a specific page, post, product or other resource.
How does the Slug Generator convert spaces?
Spaces and groups of unsupported characters are converted to the separator you select, such as a hyphen or underscore.
Does the generator convert text to lowercase?
Lowercase is enabled by default. You can turn the lowercase option off if you need to preserve letter case in the generated result.
Can I use underscores instead of hyphens?
Yes. Use the Separator option to switch between hyphens and underscores.
Can I remove common words from a slug?
Yes. The optional stop-word setting removes a small predefined list of common English words. Review the result to make sure the meaning remains clear.
Can I limit the length of a slug?
Yes. Enter a maximum character length. Leave the setting at 0 if you do not want the generator to impose a maximum.
What happens to accented letters?
The tool uses Unicode normalization to convert many accented Latin letters to simpler forms, such as converting “é” to “e.” It is not a complete transliteration system for every language.
Does the URL preview create a real page?
No. It simply combines an example domain with your generated slug so you can see how the URL could look.
Should I change the slug of an existing published page?
Changing a published slug normally changes the page URL. Check your website’s redirect and URL-management options before changing an established address.
Is the ToolZippy Slug Generator free?
Yes. The Slug Generator is free to use and does not require an account.
