What counts as a business day?

A business day is a day your chosen organization or schedule treats as a working day. A common pattern is Monday through Friday, excluding Saturday and Sunday. Other organizations use Sunday through Thursday or a custom schedule. Public holidays and company closures may also be excluded.

Example: Monday to Sunday

A seven-day period contains five working days when Saturday and Sunday are excluded and there are no additional holidays. This calculator includes both dates unless you change the boundary options.

How to use this calculator

  1. Select the start and end dates.
  2. Choose a standard weekend or specify your own non-working days.
  3. Optionally enter individual holiday dates in YYYY-MM-DD format.
  4. Choose whether to include the first and last dates.
  5. Calculate to view the total working days, weekends and excluded holidays.

How holidays are counted

Only holiday dates that fall on otherwise-working days within the included range are deducted. A holiday that falls on a weekend is not subtracted a second time. This calculator does not automatically fetch public holiday calendars.

Business days vs. calendar days

Calendar days count every date in the range. Business days exclude the non-working weekdays you select and any valid holiday dates you enter. Different employers, banks, courts, delivery providers and public authorities may apply different definitions.

Useful for planning

Use the result to estimate project schedules, invoice timelines, administrative processing periods, working-day milestones and delivery windows. For contractual or statutory deadlines, confirm the applicable counting rules independently.

Frequently asked questions

Are the start and end dates included?

Yes, by default. You can independently exclude either boundary date.

Can I count Sunday–Thursday working weeks?

Yes. Choose Friday and Saturday as your weekend pattern.

Are public holidays removed automatically?

No. Enter the dates you want to exclude; holiday observance varies by location and organization.

What if a holiday falls on a weekend?

It is not deducted again because it was already excluded as a non-working day.

Can I use a custom working week?

Yes. Select Custom non-working days and mark the weekdays that should be excluded.

Does the calculator work for long date ranges?

Yes. The calculation counts full weeks efficiently; the preview is limited to the first 42 included days.
