How to Calculate a Tip

A tip is normally calculated as a percentage of the bill amount. Enter the bill before the tip, select or enter the percentage you want to use, and the calculator finds the tip amount and final bill.

Tip amount = Bill amount × Tip percentage ÷ 100
Total bill = Bill amount + Tip amount

For a bill of 100 with a 15% tip:

100 × 15 ÷ 100 = 15 tip
100 + 15 = 115 total
👥

How to Split a Bill With Tip

When everyone is sharing the bill equally, first calculate the full bill including the tip and then divide that amount by the number of people.

Amount per person = Total bill ÷ Number of people

For example, a 100 bill with a 20% tip produces a total of 120. If two people split the bill equally:

120 ÷ 2 = 60 per person

The calculator also separates the original bill share and tip share so you can see how each person’s total is formed.

Tip Percentage Examples

The table below shows how different percentages change the tip and final total for the same 100 bill.

Bill Tip Rate Tip Total
100 10% 10 110
100 15% 15 115
100 18% 18 118
100 20% 20 120
100 25% 25 125

These percentages are calculation examples, not recommendations about how much anyone should tip.

🌍

How Much Should You Tip?

There is no single tip percentage that applies everywhere. Tipping customs differ by country, type of service, venue and situation. Some places commonly expect gratuities, while in other places tipping may be optional, uncommon or already included in the bill.

The percentage buttons in this calculator are provided only as convenient mathematical presets. They should not be interpreted as a recommendation or as a statement about local tipping etiquette.

Before adding a tip, check the bill for wording such as service charge, gratuity or another included service fee. Whether an additional tip is appropriate is a separate decision from the calculation itself.

🧾

Tip Before or After Tax?

A receipt may show a subtotal, taxes, service charges and a final amount. Which figure people use as the basis for a tip can vary by local custom and personal preference.

ToolZippy does not automatically decide which part of a receipt should be tipped. Enter the amount you want to use as the tip base. If you want to calculate a percentage from the pre-tax subtotal, enter that subtotal. If you intentionally want to use the final bill amount, enter that amount instead.

For a separate tax calculation, you can use the Sales Tax Calculator.

↗️

Rounding the Final Bill

The optional rounding setting rounds the calculated final total up to the next whole currency unit before dividing it between the selected number of people.

For example, if the normal total is 57.25 and rounding is enabled, the calculator uses 58.00 as the final total. The difference created by rounding is included in the displayed total tip so the amounts still add up correctly.

Leave rounding disabled if you want the normal percentage-based result to the nearest two decimal places.

💱

About the Currency Selector

The currency selector changes the label used to display the calculation. It does not perform foreign-exchange conversion.

For example, selecting AED means the calculator treats the bill as an AED amount, while selecting USD treats the same numerical input as a dollar amount. The tip formula itself does not change.

Keep the bill and any amounts you compare in the same currency.

When a Tip Calculator Is Useful

  • Calculating a percentage tip on a restaurant bill
  • Splitting a restaurant total equally between several people
  • Checking the tip amount before paying
  • Comparing several possible tip percentages
  • Calculating each person’s share of the tip
  • Working out a service tip from a chosen percentage
  • Rounding a final shared bill for simpler payment

Browser-Based Tip Calculation

The core calculation on this page is designed to run with JavaScript in your browser. The tool uses the bill amount, percentage and number of people you enter to calculate the displayed results directly on the page.

No account is required to use the calculator. For an actual payment, always check the receipt and payment terminal because taxes, included service charges, fees or rounding practices may affect the amount due.

Note: This calculator performs arithmetic based on the values you enter. It does not determine local tipping customs or whether a tip is expected in a particular country, venue or situation.

❓

Tip Calculator FAQs

How do I calculate a 15% tip?

Multiply the bill amount by 15 and divide by 100. For example, 15% of 100 is 15, so the final total is 115.

How do I calculate a 20% tip?

Multiply the bill by 0.20. A 20% tip on a 50 bill is 10, making the total 60.

How do I split a bill with tip?

Calculate the bill plus tip, then divide the total by the number of people. ToolZippy also shows the base bill and tip per person separately.

Can I enter my own tip percentage?

Yes. You can type a custom percentage into the Tip Percentage field instead of using one of the quick percentage buttons.

Does the calculator include tax?

It calculates a tip from the bill amount you enter. If you enter a pre-tax subtotal, the tip is based on that subtotal. If you enter an amount that already includes tax, the tip is based on that amount.

Does the currency selector convert exchange rates?

No. It only changes the currency label shown with the results. The tool does not perform foreign-exchange conversion.

What does the rounding option do?

It rounds the final total upward to the next whole currency unit before splitting the total between people.

What if a service charge is already included?

Check the receipt before adding another amount. A service charge or gratuity may already be included. The calculator does not decide whether an additional tip is appropriate.

Is there one standard tip percentage everywhere?

No. Tipping practices differ by country, service type and situation. The percentages in this calculator are convenient calculation presets, not recommendations.

Is the ToolZippy Tip Calculator free?

Yes. You can use the calculator in a supported browser without creating an account.
