Unit Price Calculator
Calculate the price per item, weight, volume or length and compare two products on the same measurement basis. Useful for groceries, bulk packs, supplies and everyday price comparisons.
Calculate Price per Unit
Use a single product or switch to comparison mode to compare two package sizes.
Product B
$6.00 divided by 500 g.
How to Calculate Unit Price
Unit price tells you how much a product costs for one standardized unit of quantity. The basic calculation is:
For example, if four identical items cost 12:
The same idea applies to products sold by weight, volume or length. However, when package sizes use different units, those quantities must first be converted to the same measurement basis.
Compare Different Package Sizes
Looking only at the shelf price can be misleading. A larger package can cost more overall while still having a lower price per unit.
For example:
Product B: $10 for 1 kg = $10 per kg
Product B has the lower unit price in this example even though its total purchase price is higher.
The comparison mode converts compatible quantities to a common unit before comparing them, so 500 g can be compared with 1 kg, 16 oz with 1 lb, or 750 mL with 1 L.
Units Supported by This Calculator
| Type | Supported Units | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Count | Item | 12 bottles, 6 rolls, 24 cans |
| Metric weight | g, kg | 500 g vs 1 kg |
| Imperial weight | oz, lb | 12 oz vs 2 lb |
| Volume | mL, L | 750 mL vs 1 L |
| Length | cm, m | 50 cm vs 2 m |
Compatible units can be converted for comparison. Count-based items cannot be meaningfully converted into weight, volume or length without additional product information.
Price per Item vs Price per Weight
Choose item when the package contains a known number of comparable individual units, such as 12 cans, 6 batteries or 24 bottles.
Choose a weight unit such as grams or kilograms when the meaningful quantity is product weight. This is often more useful for foods, ingredients and bulk materials.
For liquids, use milliliters or liters. For products sold by length, such as cable, rope, fabric or some construction materials, use centimeters or meters.
The best comparison basis is normally the quantity that represents what you are actually receiving.
When Unit Price Comparison Is Useful
- Comparing small and large supermarket packages
- Checking whether a bulk pack actually offers a lower unit cost
- Comparing different bottle or container sizes
- Evaluating multipacks sold at different total prices
- Comparing supplier quotations with different package quantities
- Checking price per kilogram, liter, item or meter
- Comparing sale prices when package sizes differ

Unit Price Does Not Always Mean Better Value
A lower unit price tells you which option costs less for the same amount, but price is only one part of a buying decision.
A larger package may be cheaper per unit but still be unsuitable if you will not use the product before it expires, if storage is limited, or if you need to spend substantially more upfront.
Product quality, brand, specification, warranty, delivery cost, taxes, discount eligibility and other charges can also differ between products. Compare like with like before treating the lower unit price as the better overall purchase.
Currency and Unit Conversions
The currency selector changes how monetary results are labeled. It does not convert between currencies or use live exchange rates. Both products in comparison mode should therefore be priced in the same currency.
Measurement conversions are handled only between compatible units: grams and kilograms, ounces and pounds, milliliters and liters, or centimeters and meters.
The calculator does not convert weight into volume because that would require information such as the density of the specific product.
Browser-Based Calculation
The unit-price calculation on this page is designed to run in your browser using JavaScript. Prices and quantities entered into the tool are used directly on the page to calculate and compare unit costs.
No account is required. For an actual purchase or procurement decision, confirm the current price, package quantity, taxes, delivery charges and product specifications with the seller or supplier.
Important: Unit price is a mathematical comparison of cost per quantity. It does not account automatically for product quality, expiry, shipping, taxes, rebates, membership discounts or other purchase conditions.
Unit Price Calculator FAQs
What is unit price?
Unit price is the cost for one standardized unit of a product, such as price per item, kilogram, gram, liter, ounce, pound or meter.
How do I calculate price per unit?
Divide the total price by the quantity. For example, if four items cost 12, the unit price is 12 divided by 4, or 3 per item.
How do I compare two different package sizes?
Convert both quantities to the same measurement unit and compare their price per unit. ToolZippy’s comparison mode performs compatible unit conversions automatically.
Can I compare 500 g with 1 kg?
Yes. Grams and kilograms are compatible weight units. The calculator can normalize both products to the same unit before comparing their prices.
Can I compare ounces with pounds?
Yes. The calculator supports ounce and pound conversion when comparing weight-based products.
Can I compare milliliters with liters?
Yes. Milliliters and liters are compatible volume units and can be normalized for unit-price comparison.
Can I compare kilograms with liters?
Not directly. Kilograms measure weight while liters measure volume. Converting between them requires product-specific density information, which this calculator does not request.
Does the currency selector convert currencies?
No. It changes the currency label only. When comparing two products, enter both prices in the same currency.
Does the lowest unit price always mean the best product?
No. Unit price compares cost per quantity only. Quality, product specifications, expiry, shipping, taxes, storage needs and other factors may also matter.
Is the ToolZippy Unit Price Calculator free?
Yes. The calculator can be used in a supported browser without creating an account.
