Sort Lines Online
Sort lines alphabetically, naturally by numbers, by line length or in random order. You can also trim whitespace, remove blank lines and remove duplicates.
Sort Your Text Lines
Paste one item per line, choose a sorting method and direction, then copy the organized result.
How to Sort Lines Alphabetically
Paste or type one item on each line. Select Alphabetical as the sorting method and choose either ascending or descending order.
Ascending alphabetical order places earlier text first, while descending order reverses that ordering.
By default, alphabetical comparisons are case-insensitive. Enable Case sensitive when uppercase and lowercase differences should affect the comparison.
Natural Sorting for Numbered Text
Ordinary text sorting can produce unexpected ordering when lines contain numbers. For example, a purely lexical comparison may place “Item 10” before “Item 2.”
The Natural / Numeric option uses number-aware comparison so numbered items are usually arranged in the order people expect.
It is especially useful for names containing embedded numbers, such as Item 2, Item 10 or Chapter 25. It is not intended to parse complex mathematical expressions.
Sort Lines by Length
Choose Line Length when you want to organize text according to the number of characters in each line.
If the Trim line spaces option is enabled, leading and trailing whitespace is removed before the line length is measured.
Clean Lines While Sorting
Sorting often goes together with basic list cleanup. The available options let you prepare the lines before they are sorted.
- Trim line spaces: removes whitespace from the beginning and end of each line.
- Remove blank lines: excludes lines that are empty after optional trimming.
- Remove duplicates: keeps the first occurrence of repeated lines before sorting.
- Case sensitive: makes letter case relevant to alphabetical and duplicate comparison.
These options can be useful when cleaning copied lists, names, keywords, inventory labels, filenames, notes or other line-based text.
How Duplicate Removal Works
When Remove duplicates is enabled, repeated lines are removed before the final sorting step.
With case sensitivity disabled, lines such as “Apple” and “apple” are treated as duplicates. The first version appearing in the input is retained.
With case sensitivity enabled, “Apple” and “apple” are considered different lines.
Randomize or Shuffle Lines
The Random / Shuffle method rearranges the current lines into a randomized order instead of alphabetical or length order.
Because the order is randomized, pressing Sort Lines again can produce a different arrangement.
This can be useful for casually mixing lists, prompts, names, practice items or other non-security-sensitive text.
The shuffle feature uses the browser’s standard JavaScript random-number function and is not intended for cryptographic, gambling, audit, compliance or other applications that require certified randomness.
Alphabetical Order and Language
The alphabetical and natural sorting modes use the browser’s locale-aware text comparison. The exact ordering of some accented characters, symbols or non-English text can therefore depend on the browser environment and language rules available on the device.
For ordinary English-language lists, the default case-insensitive mode generally provides familiar alphabetical ordering.
Common Uses for a Line Sorter
A line sorting tool can help organize many kinds of plain-text lists, including:
- names and contact lists;
- keywords and tags;
- product or inventory labels;
- filenames and folder lists;
- study terms and vocabulary;
- task or reference lists;
- numbered item names;
- copied spreadsheet values stored one per line.
The sorter treats each newline-separated entry as one line. It does not interpret the input as spreadsheet columns, CSV fields or a database table.
Browser-Based Line Sorting
This tool is designed to process the text entered into the sorter using browser-side JavaScript. Sorting, trimming, duplicate removal and line counting are performed by the page without requiring an account.
For confidential, regulated or organizational data, continue to follow the data-handling requirements that apply to your work rather than relying only on the behavior of a general online utility.
Sort Lines FAQs
How do I sort lines alphabetically online?
Paste one item per line, select Alphabetical, choose Ascending for A–Z or Descending for Z–A, and press Sort Lines.
Can I sort lines from Z to A?
Yes. Select Alphabetical as the method and Descending as the direction.
Can the tool sort lines containing numbers?
Yes. Natural / Numeric sorting is designed for text containing numbers, such as Item 2, Item 10 and Item 25.
Can I sort lines by length?
Yes. Select Line Length. Ascending puts shorter lines first, while Descending puts longer lines first.
Can I remove duplicate lines?
Yes. Enable Remove duplicates. With case sensitivity off, differently capitalized versions of the same line are treated as duplicates.
Can I remove empty lines while sorting?
Yes. Remove blank lines is enabled by default and can be switched off if you want blank entries preserved.
What does Trim line spaces do?
It removes whitespace from the beginning and end of each line before sorting and other selected cleanup operations are applied.
Is alphabetical sorting case sensitive?
It is case-insensitive by default. Enable the Case sensitive option when letter case should affect comparison and duplicate detection.
Can I randomly shuffle the lines?
Yes. Choose Random / Shuffle. This feature is intended for ordinary list mixing and not for applications requiring certified or cryptographically secure randomness.
Is the ToolZippy Sort Lines tool free?
Yes. It is free to use and does not require an account.
