Understand Your EV Running Costs
The cost of driving an EV depends on how much electricity the vehicle uses and how much you pay for that electricity.
Battery Efficiency
Derive electricity consumption from usable battery capacity and estimated driving range.
Electricity Tariffs
Compare the effect of residential and public charging electricity prices.
Trip & Annual Costs
Estimate how electricity expenses change with journey length and monthly driving distance.
EV Cost per Mile or Kilometre: Formula & Guide
The EV Cost per Mile / Km Calculator estimates the electricity cost of travelling a specific distance in an electric vehicle. It uses the vehicle’s usable battery capacity, estimated full-battery range, charging efficiency and electricity price.
How to Calculate EV Cost per Kilometre
First, estimate the amount of battery energy used per kilometre by dividing usable battery capacity by full-battery driving range. Then account for charging losses and multiply by the electricity tariff.
How to Calculate EV Cost per Mile
The same formula works for miles. Select miles and enter the vehicle’s estimated range in miles. The calculator then returns cost per mile rather than cost per kilometre.
Worked Example: 60 kWh Electric Vehicle
- Usable battery capacity: 60 kWh
- Driving range: 400 km
- Electricity price: $0.20/kWh
- Charging efficiency: 90%
- Journey distance: 150 km
Battery consumption = 60 ÷ 400 × 100 = 15 kWh/100 km.
Grid consumption = 15 ÷ 0.90 = 16.67 kWh/100 km.
Electricity cost per kilometre = 16.67 ÷ 100 × $0.20 = approximately $0.0333/km.
A 150 km journey would cost approximately $5.00 in electricity, excluding fixed charging fees.
Why Is Charging Efficiency Important?
The electricity drawn from a charger may exceed the energy stored in the battery because of conversion losses and vehicle systems. For example, 90% efficiency means that approximately 1.11 kWh must be purchased for each 1 kWh delivered to the battery.
What Is a Typical EV Electricity Consumption?
Consumption varies considerably between vehicle models and driving conditions. A smaller efficient vehicle may use less energy than a large electric SUV. Highway speed, hills, temperature and climate control also influence consumption. Use your vehicle’s recent average consumption or realistic range estimate for better results.
Does Home Charging Cost Less?
Residential charging can be less expensive than some public fast-charging options, but this depends on the tariff and charging provider. Some public networks also apply connection, parking or session fees.
How Are Monthly and Annual Costs Estimated?
Monthly electricity expenses are calculated by multiplying cost per kilometre or mile by the monthly distance entered. Annual electricity expenses are estimated by multiplying the monthly amount by twelve.
Why Are Fixed Charging Fees Excluded From Monthly Totals?
A fixed fee may apply once per charging session, not once per journey. Because the number of monthly charging sessions is not known, the calculator includes the optional fixed fee only in the individual trip result. Monthly and annual totals represent electricity expenses alone.
Is Cost per Mile the Same as Cost per Kilometre?
No. A mile is longer than a kilometre, so cost per mile will generally be higher than cost per kilometre for the same vehicle and electricity tariff. Make sure your entered range matches the selected unit.
Does This Include Total Vehicle Ownership Cost?
No. The calculator does not include purchase price, depreciation, insurance, financing, maintenance, registration, tyre wear or charger installation. It estimates electricity-related running expenses.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate EV cost per kilometre?
Divide usable battery capacity by driving range, adjust for charging efficiency, and multiply by electricity price per kWh.
How much does an electric car cost per mile?
It depends on energy consumption, charging losses and electricity tariffs. Select miles and enter your own vehicle and electricity information for an estimate.
Can I calculate EV electricity cost in AED?
Yes. Select AED and enter your electricity price in dirhams per kWh. Currency selection changes the displayed currency but does not convert exchange rates.
Does this calculator include charging losses?
Yes. It adjusts estimated battery consumption using the charging efficiency percentage you enter.
Can I estimate a 200 km trip cost?
Yes. Enter 200 as the trip distance with kilometres selected. The calculator estimates electricity required and trip cost.
Does the calculator include public charging fees?
You can enter a fixed charging fee for an individual journey. Monthly and annual estimates exclude fixed fees because charging-session frequency is not specified.
Is the result based on real-time vehicle data?
No. The calculator uses your entered battery, range and tariff values. It does not connect to a vehicle or charging network.
