EV Charging Cost Calculator: Complete Guide
An EV Charging Cost Calculator helps electric vehicle owners understand how much electricity their vehicle requires and what they may pay to recharge it. The calculation depends on usable battery capacity, starting charge, target charge, electricity tariff and charging efficiency.
How Is EV Charging Cost Calculated?
First, determine how much energy needs to be added to the vehicle battery. Then account for charging losses to estimate electricity drawn from the supply. Finally, multiply the grid energy by the electricity tariff and include any fixed charging fee.
Worked Example: Charging a 60 kWh EV
- Usable battery capacity: 60 kWh
- Starting battery charge: 20%
- Target battery charge: 90%
- Charging efficiency: 90%
- Electricity price: $0.20 per kWh
- Additional charging fee: $0
Battery energy added: 60 × (90 − 20) ÷ 100 = 42 kWh.
Grid electricity: 42 ÷ 0.90 = 46.67 kWh.
Estimated charging cost: 46.67 × $0.20 = $9.33.
Home Charging vs Public Charging
Home charging typically uses the electricity tariff applicable to the household. Public charging may use different pricing depending on the operator, charging station, charger speed, membership or location.
Public charging operators may also charge fixed session fees, parking fees or idle-time charges. These costs should be included when estimating the total amount payable.
| Factor | Home Charging | Public Charging |
|---|---|---|
| Electricity price | Residential tariff | Operator tariff |
| Extra fees | Usually no session fee | May apply |
| Charging availability | Depends on home setup | Depends on station access |
| Pricing variations | May vary by time or tier | May vary by provider and charger |
Why Does Charging Efficiency Matter?
Not all electricity drawn from the grid reaches the battery. Some is lost through power conversion, heat, charging electronics and other vehicle systems.
Charging efficiency is therefore important when estimating the amount of electricity that will appear on a bill or charging station receipt.
For example, if a battery gains 40 kWh at 90% efficiency, approximately 44.44 kWh is required from the electricity supply. Actual efficiency can change with charging speed, temperature and battery conditions.
How to Estimate Monthly EV Charging Cost
The calculator multiplies the estimated cost of one charging session by the number of charging sessions entered for a month.
If one session costs $9.33 and you complete eight similar sessions per month, the estimated monthly charging cost is approximately $74.67 before any additional expenses not included in the inputs.
How to Calculate EV Cost per 100 km
Electric vehicle energy consumption is commonly measured in kWh per 100 km or kWh per 100 miles. This describes the battery energy used to travel that distance.
The calculator accounts for charging efficiency when converting that battery energy into estimated grid electricity cost.
For a vehicle consuming 18 kWh per 100 km, with 90% charging efficiency and a tariff of $0.20 per kWh, the estimated electricity cost is $4.00 per 100 km, excluding fixed charging session fees.
What Affects Electric Vehicle Charging Costs?
Charging costs can change due to electricity prices, battery capacity, the amount of energy added, charging efficiency, fixed fees and the selected charging provider.
Some electricity tariffs change by time of day or monthly consumption tier. Public charging prices may also vary between AC and DC charging locations.
How Accurate Is This Calculator?
The calculator provides a mathematical estimate based on the values entered. It assumes a constant charging efficiency and a flat electricity price for the selected session.
It does not automatically calculate taxes, demand charges, tiered tariffs, parking fees, time-based charging fees or dynamic charging losses. Include applicable charges in your tariff or session fee where appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to charge an electric car?
The cost depends on electricity consumption, charging efficiency, the electricity price and any additional fees. Enter these values into the EV Charging Cost Calculator to estimate the cost of a charging session.
Is charging an EV at home cheaper than public charging?
Home charging can cost less, but the difference depends on local residential tariffs, public charging prices and provider fees.
How much electricity does an EV use when charging?
Electricity consumption depends on how much battery energy is added and the charging efficiency. For example, adding 42 kWh at 90% efficiency requires approximately 46.67 kWh from the supply.
Does EV charging waste electricity?
Some electricity is lost during charging through power conversion and other systems. The calculator includes these losses through the charging efficiency input.
Can I calculate EV charging costs in AED, GBP or INR?
Yes. Choose your preferred currency and enter the electricity tariff in that currency. Currency selection does not automatically convert prices using exchange rates.
Can I estimate monthly and annual EV charging expenses?
Yes. Enter the number of charging sessions per month. The calculator estimates monthly cost and annualizes it over twelve months.
Does the calculator include public charging fees?
Yes. You can enter an additional fixed fee per charging session. Time-based or variable fees must be converted to an appropriate total amount before entry.
Does this calculator estimate EV charging time?
No. This calculator focuses on charging electricity and expenses. Charging time requires additional information about charger power, vehicle charging limits and charging conditions.
