What Determines Electric Car Range?

Battery size matters, but driving range also depends on how much charge is available and how efficiently the vehicle uses energy.

🔋

Usable Battery Capacity

A larger usable battery can store more energy, but only the portion above your chosen reserve is included in the usable-range estimate.

⚡

Energy Consumption

Consumption in kWh per 100 km or miles determines how far the vehicle can travel using a given amount of battery energy.

🛣️

Driving Conditions

Highway speed, cold weather, hills, tyres and cabin climate control can increase or decrease energy consumption.

EV Range Calculator: Formula, Examples & Guide

The EV Range Calculator estimates how far an electric vehicle may travel using the battery energy currently available above a selected minimum reserve. It combines usable battery capacity with vehicle consumption and an optional adjustment for driving conditions.

How Is Electric Vehicle Range Calculated?

First, calculate the energy available between your current battery percentage and minimum reserve. Then divide that energy by the adjusted consumption per distance unit.

Available Energy (kWh) = Usable Battery Capacity × (Current Charge − Reserve Charge) ÷ 100
Adjusted Consumption = Base Consumption × Driving Adjustment ÷ 100
Estimated Range = Available Energy ÷ Adjusted Consumption × 100

Worked Example: 60 kWh Electric Car

Example inputs
  • Usable battery capacity: 60 kWh
  • Current charge: 80%
  • Minimum reserve: 5%
  • Consumption: 18 kWh/100 km
  • Driving adjustment: 100%
  • Planned trip: 180 km

Available battery energy = 60 × (80 − 5) ÷ 100 = 45 kWh.

Estimated range = 45 ÷ 18 × 100 = 250 km.

The planned 180 km journey would use approximately 32.4 kWh, leaving an estimated battery charge of 26%. This is an illustrative result, not a guarantee of actual travel distance.

What Is Usable Battery Capacity?

The advertised battery capacity may differ from the energy available for driving. Some vehicles reserve part of the battery’s total capacity for protection and battery management. Use the manufacturer’s usable-capacity figure when available.

How Does Driving Speed Affect EV Range?

Driving at higher speeds generally increases aerodynamic resistance and can raise electricity consumption. This can reduce range compared with slower or mixed driving conditions. Your vehicle’s trip computer can provide a useful real-world consumption reference.

How Does Cold Weather Affect Range?

Cold conditions can increase the energy used for cabin and battery heating. Battery performance, road conditions and driving style may also change. The effect varies by vehicle and trip.

What Is the Driving Conditions Adjustment?

This input adjusts your baseline energy consumption. At 100%, the calculator uses the consumption exactly as entered. At 120%, it assumes 20% more energy per 100 km or miles, reducing estimated range. At 90%, it assumes 10% less energy consumption.

The adjustment is a user-controlled scenario factor, not a forecast of actual weather or vehicle performance.

Why Keep a Minimum Battery Reserve?

Keeping a reserve can help account for unexpected traffic, diversions, unavailable chargers or changes in driving conditions. A suitable reserve depends on the journey, vehicle and charging availability.

How Does the Trip Feasibility Check Work?

The calculator compares your planned distance with the estimated usable range. If the trip exceeds that range, it indicates that a charging stop or revised plan may be needed. Even when a journey is within the estimate, you should not treat the result as a guarantee.

Can I Calculate EV Range in Miles?

Yes. Select miles and enter consumption in kWh per 100 miles, together with the journey distance in miles. The calculator uses the selected units consistently but does not automatically convert a consumption figure entered for kilometres.

How Is EV Range Different From Charging Time?

Driving range estimates the distance possible with available battery energy. Charging time estimates how long it may take to add energy to the battery. Use the EV Charging Time Calculator when planning a charging stop.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my electric car’s driving range?

Divide the available battery energy by your EV’s energy consumption per 100 km or miles, then multiply by 100.

How far can a 60 kWh battery travel?

At 18 kWh/100 km, a full usable 60 kWh battery would provide an idealized estimate of approximately 333 km. Actual range depends on conditions and the battery charge available.

Does the calculator account for cold weather?

You can manually increase the driving conditions adjustment to represent higher consumption. It does not use live weather data.

Can I calculate range from 80% to 10%?

Yes. Set current battery charge to 80% and minimum reserve to 10%.

Does the calculator work in miles?

Yes. Select miles and enter your consumption in kWh per 100 miles.

Why is my real EV range lower than the advertised range?

Advertised range is measured under standardized test conditions. Your actual results may differ because of speed, temperature, elevation, driving style and energy used by vehicle systems.

Can I rely on the estimated range for a long trip?

Use it as a planning reference only. Check your vehicle’s current range estimate, route, weather and charging options before travelling.
