How to Convert WebP to PNG

  1. Select a .webp image or drag it into the upload area.
  2. Check the detected filename, dimensions and original file size.
  3. Click Convert to PNG.
  4. Review the PNG preview and output information.
  5. Click Download PNG to save the converted image.

The converter keeps the source image’s pixel width and height. It changes the image file format rather than resizing the image.

⚙️

How the Conversion Works

After your browser decodes the WebP image, the tool creates a canvas with the same pixel dimensions and draws the decoded image onto it. The canvas is then exported as a PNG Blob.

Conversion path:
WebP file → browser image decoder → canvas → PNG Blob → downloadable PNG

Because PNG uses lossless image encoding, there is no adjustable JPEG- style quality slider in this converter.

🪟

Does WebP Transparency Stay Transparent?

PNG supports transparency. When the browser successfully decodes transparency in the source WebP image, drawing it onto the default transparent canvas allows transparent areas to remain transparent in the PNG output.

The checkerboard behind the preview is only a page background used to make transparent areas easier to see. It is not added to the downloaded PNG.

If a source image already contains a solid background, converting the file to PNG does not automatically remove that background.

📐

Are Image Dimensions Changed?

No resizing step is performed. If your WebP image is 1600 × 900 pixels, the generated PNG canvas is also 1600 × 900 pixels.

This makes the converter useful when you need another file format but want to retain the original pixel dimensions.

Example:
1600 × 900 WebP → 1600 × 900 PNG
📦

Why Can the PNG File Be Larger?

Changing WebP to PNG does not guarantee a smaller file. In many cases, the PNG can be substantially larger because WebP and PNG use different compression methods.

WebP can use either lossy or lossless compression, while PNG uses lossless compression. A photographic WebP that was efficiently compressed may therefore become much larger when represented as PNG.

The converter shows both the original file size and generated PNG file size so you can compare them directly.

WebP vs PNG

Feature WebP PNG

Lossy compression Supported Not standard PNG behavior
Transparency Supported Supported
Animation Supported Not preserved by this converter
Typical use Efficient web images Lossless graphics and transparency
🎞️

What Happens to Animated WebP Files?

This converter is intended for still-image conversion. Browser canvas drawing captures the decoded image frame used when the image is drawn, then exports that canvas as a standard PNG.

It does not preserve WebP animation as an animated PNG. If maintaining animation is important, use a conversion workflow specifically designed for animated images.

🔍

When Is PNG a Useful Output Format?

PNG can be useful when a workflow, application or upload form expects PNG rather than WebP. It is also commonly used for graphics where lossless pixel data and transparency are useful.

  • Transparent logos and interface graphics
  • Screenshots and diagrams
  • Graphics containing sharp text or edges
  • Applications that do not accept WebP input
  • Editing workflows that specifically require PNG

For photographic website images where file size matters, converting WebP to PNG may not be the most efficient choice.

🔒

Browser-Based Image Processing

This converter is designed to perform its core conversion in your browser using the browser’s image-decoding, canvas and Blob features. The conversion code on this page does not require an image-upload API to create the PNG result.

Very large images can require substantial browser memory because the decoded image and canvas both occupy memory while processing. This can be especially noticeable on older phones or devices with limited resources.

Keep an untouched copy of important source images. Browser support and available device memory can affect whether unusually large or unusual WebP files can be decoded successfully.

WebP to PNG FAQs

How do I convert WebP to PNG?

Choose a WebP file, click Convert to PNG, preview the result and use the Download PNG button to save the converted file.

Is this WebP to PNG converter free?

Yes. You can use the converter in a supported browser without creating an account.

Does converting WebP to PNG reduce image quality?

The browser decodes the WebP and exports the resulting pixels as PNG. PNG itself uses lossless compression, but converting a previously lossy WebP cannot restore image information that was already discarded when that WebP was created.

Will transparency be preserved?

PNG supports transparency. Transparent pixels decoded from the source WebP can remain transparent when exported through the canvas.

Does the converter resize my image?

No. The canvas is created using the source image’s natural width and height, so the output keeps the same pixel dimensions.

Why is my PNG larger than my WebP?

WebP and PNG use different compression methods. An efficiently compressed WebP, particularly a photographic image, can produce a much larger PNG file.

Can it convert animated WebP to animated PNG?

No. This tool creates a standard still PNG from the image drawn to the canvas and does not preserve WebP animation.

Does the tool upload my image for conversion?

The core conversion is designed to run in your browser using browser image, canvas and Blob features. It does not require an image-upload API to create the PNG.

Can I use the converter on a phone?

Yes, on compatible modern mobile browsers. Very large images may use significant memory and can be harder for lower-memory devices to process.

What should I do if a WebP file will not open?

Confirm that the file is actually a WebP image and try a current browser. A damaged file, unsupported WebP feature or insufficient device memory can prevent decoding.
