📘 How JPG to PNG Conversion Works

JPG and PNG are both common raster image formats, but they use different compression methods and support different features. This converter decodes your JPG or JPEG image in the browser, draws its pixels to a canvas and then creates a new PNG file.

The conversion keeps the source image’s pixel width and height. For example, a 1600 × 900 JPG is converted into a 1600 × 900 PNG unless you separately resize the image with the Image Resizer.

1 Choose a JPG or JPEG

Drag a JPG into the upload area or use the Choose JPG button. ToolZippy displays the filename, pixel dimensions and original file size after the browser successfully decodes the image.

2 Convert the Image

Select Convert to PNG. The browser draws the decoded image at its original dimensions and encodes the result as PNG.

3 Compare and Download

After conversion, you can compare the original JPG file size with the generated PNG file size before downloading the new file.

⚖ JPG vs PNG: What Changes?

JPG / JPEG Uses lossy compression and is commonly efficient for photographs and images containing many color variations.
PNG Uses lossless compression and supports transparency, making it useful for many graphics, screenshots and interface assets.

Converting from JPG to PNG changes the file format and future encoding behavior. It does not recreate image information that was already discarded when the JPG was originally compressed.

Important: converting a JPG to PNG does not make the existing image sharper or restore lost JPG detail. The new PNG stores the pixels produced by decoding the JPG; it cannot recover information that is no longer present in the source.

◫ Will JPG to PNG Create Transparency?

No. A normal JPG image does not contain an alpha transparency channel. PNG supports transparency, but converting an ordinary JPG to PNG does not automatically identify a background and remove it. The converted PNG will retain the visible pixels of the JPG.

If you need a transparent background, that requires a separate background-removal or editing process rather than a simple format conversion.

⇣ Will the PNG Be Smaller Than the JPG?

Not necessarily. In many cases, especially with photographs, the PNG can be considerably larger than the JPG because PNG uses lossless compression while JPG is designed around lossy compression.

That is why this converter displays both the original and generated file sizes instead of assuming that converting to PNG will reduce storage.

If your main goal is reducing file size rather than changing format, try the Image Compressor.

📐 Does Conversion Change Image Dimensions?

No. This tool uses the JPG’s natural pixel dimensions for the output canvas. A 1200 × 800 source therefore produces a 1200 × 800 PNG.

Changing dimensions is a separate operation. Use the Image Resizer when you need a different width or height, or the Image Cropper when you want to remove part of an image.

🎯 When Is PNG a Useful Choice?

  • When a workflow or platform specifically requires PNG files.
  • When you want subsequent saves in a lossless raster format.
  • For screenshots, interface graphics and many illustrations.
  • When working with software that expects PNG input.
  • When you need a PNG version before additional editing.

PNG is not automatically the best format for every image. JPG can remain more practical for photographs when smaller file size is a priority, while WebP may be useful for modern web delivery.

W JPG to PNG vs JPG to WebP

Choose PNG when you specifically need PNG compatibility, lossless PNG storage or a workflow that uses PNG files. For web-oriented images where smaller files may be useful, you can also compare the result with ToolZippy’s Image to WebP Converter.

The best format depends on the image and how it will be used rather than on one format being universally better.

🔒 Browser-Based Processing

This converter is designed to use browser APIs to read the selected image and create the PNG result on the page. The conversion itself does not require you to install image editing software.

Large images require memory for decoding and canvas processing. Very high-resolution images may therefore process more slowly or fail on devices with limited available memory.

Keep an untouched copy of important originals, especially when preparing images for professional, archival or production work.

❓ JPG to PNG FAQs

How do I convert JPG to PNG?

Choose a JPG or JPEG image, select Convert to PNG, preview the generated result and use Download PNG to save the converted file.

Is this JPG to PNG converter free?

Yes. ToolZippy’s JPG to PNG converter is designed for free use without requiring an account.

Does converting JPG to PNG improve image quality?

No. PNG can store the decoded image without additional PNG compression loss, but it cannot restore detail already lost during earlier JPG compression.

Does JPG to PNG make the background transparent?

No. JPG does not contain transparency information, so a normal format conversion retains the JPG’s visible background pixels. Background removal requires a separate editing process.

Will the PNG have the same dimensions as my JPG?

Yes. This converter keeps the original pixel width and height. Use an image resizer if you also need to change the dimensions.

Will converting JPG to PNG reduce file size?

Not necessarily. PNG files can be larger than JPG files, particularly for photographs. The converter shows the source and output sizes so you can compare them.

What is the difference between JPG and JPEG?

JPG and JPEG refer to the same image format. The shorter .jpg file extension became common because older systems historically used three-character extensions.

Can I convert a JPEG file as well as a JPG?

Yes. The converter accepts standard JPG and JPEG images supported by the browser.

Does JPG to PNG work on mobile devices?

Yes. It is designed for modern mobile and desktop browsers, although very large images can require significant device memory.

When should I use PNG instead of JPG?

PNG can be useful for screenshots, graphics, lossless raster workflows and situations where PNG is specifically required. JPG often remains more file-size-efficient for photographs.
