Free VAT Calculator
Add VAT to a net amount or remove VAT from a VAT-inclusive price. See the net amount, VAT amount and gross total together using any percentage rate you enter.
Calculate VAT
Choose whether the amount excludes VAT or already includes VAT.
$100.00 net + $20.00 VAT at 20%.
How to Add VAT
When a price is shown before VAT, calculate the VAT amount from the net price and then add it to the net price.
Gross amount = Net amount + VAT amount
For example, using a net amount of 100 and a 20% rate:
100 + 20 = 120 gross
Choose Add VAT when the amount entered is the VAT-exclusive or net amount.
How to Remove VAT From a Gross Price
Removing VAT from an inclusive price is not the same as simply subtracting the VAT percentage from that price. The percentage was originally calculated from the smaller net amount.
VAT amount = Gross amount − Net amount
For a VAT-inclusive amount of 120 at 20%:
120 − 100 = 20 VAT
Subtracting 20% directly from 120 would give 96, which is not the original net price in this example.
Net, VAT and Gross Explained
| Term | Meaning in This Calculator | Example at 20% |
|---|---|---|
| Net amount | Price before VAT is added | 100.00 |
| VAT amount | Tax calculated from the net amount | 20.00 |
| Gross amount | Net amount plus VAT | 120.00 |
These terms are useful when checking invoices, quotations and VAT-inclusive or VAT-exclusive prices. The terminology used on actual documents can vary by jurisdiction and business.

Enter the rate that actually applies to the transaction you are calculating.
VAT-Inclusive vs VAT-Exclusive Prices
A VAT-exclusive price is the amount before VAT has been added. If you enter an exclusive price, use the Add VAT mode.
A VAT-inclusive price already contains VAT. If you want to determine the underlying net amount and included VAT portion, use the Remove VAT mode.
When checking a real invoice or quotation, first determine whether the stated amount is inclusive or exclusive. Using the wrong mode changes the result.
VAT Rates and Real-World Transactions
VAT rates are not universal. They can differ between countries and may also differ according to the type of goods or services involved. Transactions may be subject to standard, reduced, zero or other treatment depending on the applicable rules.
For that reason, this calculator does not automatically assign a VAT rate based on a country. Enter the percentage that applies to the specific transaction you are checking.
For accounting, tax returns, invoices or other compliance work, confirm the applicable rate and tax treatment using the relevant tax authority or a qualified professional.
Currency Selector
The currency selector changes the monetary label shown with the calculation. It does not convert exchange rates.
For example, if you select AED and enter 100, the calculator treats the amount as AED 100. If you select USD, the same numerical value is treated as $100.
VAT calculations use percentages, so the arithmetic is the same regardless of the currency. Keep all amounts in the same currency for one calculation.

Calculation Accuracy and Browser Processing
The core VAT calculation on this page is designed to run in your browser using JavaScript. The calculator applies the rate you enter to the amount you provide and displays the resulting net, VAT and gross values.
Displayed amounts can be rounded to the selected number of decimal places. Actual invoice and accounting systems may apply specific rounding rules at line-item, tax or invoice-total level, so small differences can occur.
Tax note: ToolZippy does not determine whether VAT applies to a transaction, which rate is legally applicable, whether an amount is recoverable, or how a transaction should be reported. For tax compliance, confirm current requirements with the relevant tax authority or an appropriately qualified adviser.
VAT Calculator FAQs
How do I add VAT to a price?
Multiply the net price by the VAT percentage divided by 100 to find the VAT amount, then add that VAT amount to the net price.
How do I remove VAT from an inclusive price?
Divide the VAT-inclusive gross amount by 1 plus the VAT rate expressed as a decimal. The difference between the gross and net amounts is the included VAT.
Why can’t I just subtract 20% to remove 20% VAT?
Because the 20% VAT was calculated from the net amount, not from the larger VAT-inclusive amount. For example, 20% VAT added to 100 produces 120, but subtracting 20% from 120 produces 96 rather than the original 100.
What is the difference between net and gross?
In this calculator, net means the amount before VAT and gross means the amount after VAT has been added.
Can I enter any VAT rate?
Yes. Enter the percentage you want to calculate. The quick-rate buttons are optional presets and do not represent country-specific tax advice.
Does ToolZippy automatically know my country’s VAT rate?
No. The calculator deliberately uses the rate you enter because VAT rates and tax treatment can differ by jurisdiction, transaction and product or service.
Does the currency selector convert exchange rates?
No. It changes the currency label shown with the results but does not perform currency conversion.
Why might my invoice differ slightly from the calculator?
Rounding methods can differ. Some systems round VAT for individual line items while others calculate or round at a different stage of the invoice.
Can I use this calculator for tax filing?
The tool can help check arithmetic, but it does not determine tax liability, applicable rates, reporting treatment or filing requirements. Use the relevant tax authority’s guidance for compliance work.
Is the ToolZippy VAT Calculator free?
Yes. You can use the calculator in a supported browser without creating an account.
