UPS Runtime Calculator
Estimate how long an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) can keep equipment operating during an outage. Enter the battery bank’s DC voltage and amp-hours, connected load, inverter efficiency and usable battery capacity.
Calculate UPS Battery Backup Time
Use the DC voltage and amp-hour rating of the complete battery string. If identical strings are wired in parallel, enter their number separately. Do not enter an individual battery’s voltage as the total string voltage.
Estimated for a constant 1,500 W output load, 90% efficiency and 90% usable discharge.
What Does the UPS Runtime Calculator Consider?
🔋 Battery energy
Estimate nominal watt-hours from string voltage, amp-hours and the number of parallel strings.
🔌 Output power
Account for connected equipment wattage and losses in the UPS inverter.
🛡️ Battery reserve
Adjust usable depth of discharge and battery condition instead of assuming full nameplate capacity.
UPS Runtime Calculator: Formula, Examples and Guide
The UPS Runtime Calculator provides an approximate battery backup duration for a constant electrical load. It is useful for initial planning of small office systems, computers, network equipment and other UPS-supported loads. It cannot replace manufacturer runtime curves or engineering design for critical systems.
UPS Battery Backup Time Formula
Worked Example: 24 V, 100 Ah UPS Battery Bank
Assume one 24 V battery string rated at 100 Ah, a 1,500 W constant output load, 90% inverter efficiency, 90% depth of discharge, 90% battery condition factor and 20 W internal consumption.
Nominal energy = 24 × 100 = 2,400 Wh.
Usable energy = 2,400 × 0.90 × 0.90 = 1,944 Wh.
Battery-side draw = 1,500 ÷ 0.90 + 20 = 1,686.67 W.
Runtime = 1,944 ÷ 1,686.67 = 1.15 hours (about 69 minutes).
At high discharge rates, actual battery runtime may be considerably shorter, especially for lead-acid systems.
How Are Watts Different from VA?
Watts represent real electrical power; volt-amperes (VA) represent apparent power. UPS ratings often specify both. The calculator requires the actual output load in watts. Do not treat a 1,500 VA load as automatically equivalent to 1,500 W; power factor matters.
How Do Series and Parallel Batteries Affect Runtime?
Series connections increase the battery string voltage while retaining the same amp-hour capacity. Parallel strings increase total amp-hour capacity at the same voltage. Enter the combined string voltage and one string’s Ah, then the number of parallel strings. Use matching batteries and follow manufacturer instructions for battery-bank configurations.
Why Does Battery Chemistry Matter?
Lead-acid battery capacity is sensitive to discharge rate, temperature and battery condition. A nameplate Ah rating may be measured over a long discharge period; at high UPS loads, the available capacity may be much lower. Lithium batteries have different behavior and battery management limits. This simplified model does not implement chemistry-specific discharge curves.
Can I Use This UPS Runtime Calculator for a Server Room?
It can provide a preliminary estimate, but critical infrastructure requires a properly engineered UPS system. Check the UPS manufacturer’s runtime tables, redundancy, battery condition, load profile, maintenance requirements and any site-specific standards.
How Can I Get a More Accurate UPS Backup Time?
Measure the connected load in watts, identify the actual UPS model and battery configuration, check the manufacturer’s runtime chart and test the system under an approved maintenance procedure. Consider battery age, temperature and capacity testing.
Does a Higher UPS VA Rating Always Mean Longer Runtime?
No. A higher VA rating generally relates to the load the UPS can support, not necessarily the energy stored in its batteries. Runtime depends on battery energy, load and system losses.

UPS Runtime Calculator FAQs
How long will a UPS run a computer?
It depends on the battery capacity, computer power consumption and UPS losses. Enter the computer’s measured watts and the UPS battery specifications to estimate the time.
How do I calculate UPS runtime from Ah and voltage?
Multiply DC voltage by Ah to estimate nominal Wh, adjust for usable capacity and efficiency, then divide by battery-side watts.
Is a UPS rated 1000 VA the same as 1000 W?
No. VA measures apparent power and watts measure real power. Check the UPS watt rating and your equipment’s actual load.
Can this UPS Runtime Calculator estimate lithium UPS runtime?
It provides an illustrative energy estimate, but actual runtime depends on battery management, operating limits and manufacturer specifications.
Why is my actual UPS runtime shorter?
High discharge current, aging batteries, temperature, inverter losses and UPS shutdown settings can reduce actual runtime.
Should I use this estimate for a critical data center?
No. Use certified manufacturer runtime information and a qualified engineering assessment for critical or safety-related loads.
What is the difference between UPS runtime and power station runtime?
A UPS is designed to provide backup power during supply interruptions. Portable power stations may have different outlets, operating modes and conversion losses. Both depend on available battery energy and load.
