Power Station Runtime Calculator
Estimate how long a portable power station can run AC and DC devices. Account for usable battery charge, inverter efficiency and the power station’s own operating consumption.
Power Station Runtime Calculator Inputs
Estimated Portable Power Runtime
Estimated with 90% usable charge and 90% AC inverter efficiency.
What Does This Power Station Runtime Calculator Include?
Adjust starting charge and reserve level instead of assuming every rated watt-hour is available.
Separate inverter-powered AC devices from DC/USB equipment for clearer assumptions.
Include inverter efficiency and estimated internal idle draw in the runtime model.
Power Station Runtime Calculator: Formula, Examples and Guide
The Power Station Runtime Calculator estimates how long a portable battery power station can supply connected devices. It uses nominal battery capacity, available charge, AC inverter efficiency, combined device wattage and internal station consumption. Actual runtime may be shorter or longer depending on the equipment and conditions.
How to Calculate Portable Power Station Runtime
Worked Example: 1,024 Wh Power Station
Assume a 1,024 Wh station starts at 100% charge, stops at 10% reserve, supplies a constant 100 W AC device, operates at 90% inverter efficiency and draws 10 W internally.
Available energy = 1,024 × 0.90 = 921.6 Wh.
Battery-side draw = 100 ÷ 0.90 + 10 = 121.11 W.
Runtime = 921.6 ÷ 121.11 = 7.61 hours, or about 7 hours 37 minutes.
What Is the Difference Between Watts and Watt-Hours?
Watts (W) measure the rate at which a device uses electrical power. Watt-hours (Wh) measure stored or consumed electrical energy. A 100 W device operating for one hour consumes 100 Wh in an idealized constant-load calculation.
How Does Inverter Efficiency Affect Runtime?
AC appliances usually receive power through an inverter. If the inverter operates at 90% efficiency, a 100 W AC device requires about 111.1 W from the battery before other station losses. Efficiency may vary with load and temperature.
Can I Run Multiple Devices Together?
Yes. Add their typical running wattages into the combined AC or DC field. This Power Station Runtime Calculator assumes the devices run simultaneously at a constant load. Check the power station’s continuous output rating and each appliance’s starting surge separately.
Does a 1,000 Wh Power Station Always Provide 1,000 Wh to Devices?
No. Nominal capacity is not the same as energy delivered at the outlets. Battery reserve, conversion losses, idle draw, operating temperature and battery management can reduce usable output.
What About Refrigerators and Other Cycling Loads?
A refrigerator or compressor appliance may cycle on and off. Using its rated running watts continuously can overestimate consumption. Measured average power or actual energy use over a representative period generally provides a better estimate.
What About High-Power Devices?
Heaters, kettles and other high-wattage devices may exceed the station’s AC output limit. The calculator estimates energy-based runtime only and does not confirm compatibility or safe operation.
How Can I Improve Runtime Accuracy?
Use measured device consumption, manufacturer-reported inverter losses and a realistic battery reserve. Check whether the station has automatic shutoff, eco mode or special operating limits.

Power Station Runtime Calculator FAQs
How long will a 1,000 Wh power station run a 100 W device?
Ten hours is the ideal calculation with no losses or reserve. Real-world runtime is typically shorter once inverter losses, standby consumption and unusable battery charge are considered.
Does this Power Station Runtime Calculator support USB devices?
Yes. Enter combined USB and other DC device wattage in the DC field. DC conversion losses are not modeled separately, so actual runtime may differ.
Can I calculate power station runtime for a CPAP machine?
You can estimate energy-based runtime using the device’s actual running wattage. For essential medical equipment, do not rely on this estimate alone; follow medical-device and power-station manufacturer guidance and maintain an appropriate backup plan.
Can a power station run an air conditioner?
Only if the station supports the air conditioner’s continuous power and starting requirements. This calculator does not check surge or outlet ratings.
What does the battery reserve setting do?
It subtracts the specified percentage from the starting charge to estimate the fraction of nominal battery energy available for use.
Does this include solar charging while in use?
No. This version estimates discharge runtime without simultaneous solar input or grid charging.
Why might the real runtime be lower?
High surge loads, temperature, battery age, inverter losses and changing device consumption can all affect the result.
