Reverse Text

Reverse text by characters, word order or line order. You can also reverse the characters inside each word or flip the content of each line independently.

🔄 What Is a Reverse Text Tool?

A reverse text tool changes the order of characters, words or lines in plain text. The exact result depends on the reversal mode you select.

Character reversal is only one possibility. You can instead reverse the order of complete words, reverse each word while keeping the words in their original positions, or change the order of lines.

⚙️ Five Ways to Reverse Text

Reverse Characters Flips the character sequence across the complete input.
Reverse Word Order Keeps each whitespace-separated token intact but places the tokens in reverse order.
Reverse Each Word Keeps token order but reverses the characters inside each non-whitespace token.
Reverse Line Order Moves the final line to the top and the first line to the bottom without reversing characters inside each line.
Reverse Each Line Keeps the lines in their existing order but reverses the character sequence within every line.

🔤 Character Reversal vs Word Reversal

Character reversal and word-order reversal produce very different results.

Mode Input Result
Characters Hello world dlrow olleH
Word order Hello world today today world Hello
Each word Hello world olleH dlrow
Line order Line 1 ↵ Line 2 ↵ Line 3 Line 3 ↵ Line 2 ↵ Line 1

Choose the mode according to which part of the text structure you want to change.

😀 How Unicode Characters Are Handled

Text reversal is more complicated than simply reversing a list of computer code units. Some visible characters are represented internally by multiple Unicode code points, and some emoji are sequences made from several components.

When the browser supports Intl.Segmenter, this tool uses grapheme segmentation for character-based reversal. That helps keep many user-perceived characters, including complex emoji and combining-character sequences, together while their overall order is reversed.

On browsers without that feature, the tool falls back to reversing Unicode code points with Array.from(). That fallback is better than splitting UTF-16 code units, but some complex grapheme sequences may still be separated.

Important technical limitation

Unicode text is complex. Grapheme-aware processing improves character reversal, but the visual result can still depend on the language, script, font, bidirectional-text rules and browser rendering.

📝 What Happens to Spaces and Punctuation?

The answer depends on the selected mode.

In Reverse Characters mode, spaces and punctuation are part of the character sequence, so their positions are reversed along with the surrounding text.

In Word Order mode, the tool reverses whitespace-separated text tokens. The output uses single spaces between those tokens, so the original combination of spaces, tabs and line breaks is not preserved in that mode.

In Reverse Each Word mode, whitespace is preserved while the non-whitespace tokens themselves are reversed.

↕ Reversing Multi-Line Text

For multi-line content, there are two separate operations.

Reverse line order

This changes the vertical order of the lines:

Before:
First
Second
Third

After:
Third
Second
First

Reverse each line

This keeps the vertical order but reverses each individual line:

Before:
First
Second

After:
tsriF
dnoceS

These modes can be useful for experimenting with lists, test data and text transformations without manually rearranging each line.

💡 Uses for Reversed Text

Reverse text is mostly useful for experimentation, puzzles and text manipulation rather than ordinary writing.

  • Create simple word and letter puzzles.
  • Explore palindromes and character patterns.
  • Reverse lists or line-based notes.
  • Generate transformed text for demonstrations or testing.
  • Compare character reversal with word-order reversal.
  • Experiment with Unicode and text-processing behavior.
Reversed text is not encryption

Reversing characters does not protect information. Anyone can reverse the operation easily, so never use text reversal as a security or confidentiality method.

🪞 Is Reverse Text the Same as Mirror Text?

No. Reversing a character sequence changes its order. It does not geometrically mirror the shapes of the letters.

For example, reversing ABC produces CBA. A true graphical mirror transformation would instead involve changing how each glyph is visually rendered, which this plain-text tool does not do.

Some websites create “mirror-like” text using special Unicode symbols that resemble flipped letters. That is a different transformation from reversing ordinary text.

🔁 Can You Restore the Original Text?

Some reversal operations are self-inverting. For example, reversing the same character sequence twice normally returns the original sequence when the same segmentation method is used.

The same principle applies to reversing line order twice.

However, Word Order mode normalizes whitespace to single spaces. Because that formatting information is discarded, running that transformation twice may restore the word order but not the exact original spacing or line breaks.

📝 How to Reverse Text

  1. Paste or type text into the input area.
  2. Select Characters, Word Order, Each Word, Line Order or Each Line.
  3. Click Reverse Text.
  4. Review the transformed result.
  5. Use Use Result as Input if you want to apply another transformation to the result.
  6. Copy the result or download it as a plain-text file.

The character, word and line counters describe the current input so you can quickly check the size and structure of the text before processing it.

🔒 Browser Processing and Privacy

The text-reversal operations on this page are designed to run with JavaScript in your browser. Your text does not need to be sent to a separate text-processing service solely to perform these reversal operations.

Normal website technologies such as hosting, analytics, security, consent systems or advertising may operate separately according to ToolZippy’s applicable site policies.

For confidential or regulated information, follow the data-handling requirements that apply to you or your organization.

❓ Reverse Text FAQs

What does the Reverse Text tool do?

It can reverse the order of characters, words or lines. It can also reverse the characters inside each word or inside each individual line.

How do I reverse the letters in text?

Choose Characters mode and click Reverse Text. The overall character sequence will be reversed.

Can I reverse only the order of words?

Yes. Word Order mode keeps each whitespace-separated token intact and reverses the order of those tokens.

Can I reverse every word separately?

Yes. Each Word mode reverses the characters within each non-whitespace token while keeping the token order and whitespace structure.

Can I reverse the order of lines?

Yes. Line Order mode places the last line first and the first line last without reversing the characters within each line.

Can I reverse the characters on each line without changing line order?

Yes. Choose Each Line mode. The lines remain in their existing positions while the character sequence of each line is reversed.

Does Reverse Text support emoji?

When available, the tool uses the browser’s Intl.Segmenter feature to keep many grapheme clusters and complex emoji sequences together during character reversal. A Unicode code-point fallback is used when that feature is unavailable.

Is reversed text encrypted?

No. Text reversal provides no meaningful security because the transformation is easy to undo. Do not use it to protect confidential information.

Can I download the reversed text?

Yes. The generated result can be downloaded as a plain-text .txt file.

Is the Reverse Text tool free?

Yes. You can use it without creating an account.
