Image Dimensions Checker
Check an image’s exact pixel width and height, resolution, aspect ratio, megapixels, orientation, file size and format directly in your browser.
Check Image Dimensions
Choose an image to instantly inspect its dimensions and basic file information. The checker reads the image without changing the original file.
How to Check Image Dimensions
ToolZippy’s Image Dimensions Checker reads basic properties of an image that your browser can decode. It is useful when you need to know an image’s exact pixel dimensions before resizing, cropping, uploading or publishing it.
What Are Image Dimensions?
Image dimensions describe the number of pixels across an image and the number of pixels from top to bottom. They are normally written as width × height.
Pixel dimensions are different from the physical size of an image when printed. A 1920 × 1080 image tells you how many pixels it contains in each direction, but not by itself how large the image will appear on paper.
What Is Image Aspect Ratio?
Aspect ratio describes the proportional relationship between an image’s width and height. The checker simplifies the two dimensions using their greatest common divisor.
For example, an image measuring 1920 × 1080 pixels simplifies to an aspect ratio of 16:9.
The tool also displays the decimal width-to-height ratio. For example, 16:9 is approximately 1.7778.
How Are Megapixels Calculated?
Megapixels describe the total number of image pixels in millions. ToolZippy calculates this from the image’s pixel width and height:
Megapixel count describes pixel quantity. It does not by itself measure sharpness, compression quality, focus, noise or the overall visual quality of a photograph.
Landscape, Portrait or Square
The checker identifies the image orientation from its pixel dimensions:
- Landscape – width is greater than height.
- Portrait – height is greater than width.
- Square – width and height are equal.
Image Dimensions vs File Size
Pixel dimensions and file size are different measurements. Dimensions describe the width and height in pixels, while file size describes how much storage the image file occupies.
Two images can have exactly the same dimensions but very different file sizes because of format, compression settings, image complexity and metadata.
If your dimensions are suitable but the file is too large, use the Image Compressor.
Image Dimensions vs Resolution
In everyday web usage, people often use the word resolution to refer to pixel dimensions such as 1920 × 1080. This checker reports that pixel resolution.
Print-related measurements such as PPI or DPI are a separate concept and cannot be determined reliably from width and height alone without additional metadata or an intended print size.
Why Check Image Dimensions?
Knowing an image’s dimensions is useful before performing many common image tasks. You may want to inspect an image before:
- Uploading it to a website or content management system.
- Resizing it to a required width or height.
- Cropping it to a different composition or aspect ratio.
- Comparing multiple versions of the same graphic.
- Preparing product photos, thumbnails or presentation graphics.
- Checking whether an image is landscape, portrait or square.
What If the Dimensions Are Wrong?
Checking an image does not modify it. If the dimensions do not match what you need, choose the appropriate editing operation.
Use the Image Resizer when you want to change the width or height of the complete image. Use the Image Cropper when you want to remove unwanted outer areas and keep only a selected region.
Browser-Based Image Checking
The core dimension-checking operation is designed to run with browser-side JavaScript. After you select an image, the browser decodes it so the page can read its natural pixel width and height and calculate the other displayed values.
The checker does not need to alter the image or create a new image file. Very large files may still require more memory to decode, particularly on older mobile devices.

Image Dimensions Checker FAQs
What does the Image Dimensions Checker show?
It shows the image width, height, pixel resolution, simplified aspect ratio, decimal ratio, megapixel count, orientation, file size, file name and browser-reported file type.
Is the Image Dimensions Checker free?
Yes. You can check image dimensions for free without creating an account.
What do image width and height mean?
Width is the number of pixels across the image, while height is the number of pixels from the top to the bottom.
How is the aspect ratio calculated?
The width and height are divided by their greatest common divisor to produce a simplified ratio such as 16:9, 4:3 or 1:1.
How are image megapixels calculated?
The image width is multiplied by its height and the result is divided by one million. A 1920 × 1080 image contains about 2.07 megapixels.
Does a larger megapixel number mean better image quality?
Not necessarily. Megapixels measure pixel quantity. Image quality also depends on factors such as source quality, focus, compression and image processing.
Is file size the same as image dimensions?
No. File size measures storage usage, while image dimensions measure width and height in pixels.
Does this tool change my image?
No. The checker reads information from the selected image and displays it. It does not resize, crop or otherwise modify the original file.
Can I check whether an image is portrait or landscape?
Yes. The tool identifies an image as landscape, portrait or square by comparing its width and height.
Does the dimension check run in my browser?
The core checking operation is designed to use browser-side JavaScript to decode the selected image and read its natural pixel dimensions.
