Image to Base64
Convert an image into a Base64-encoded string or complete image Data URL. Preview the selected image, inspect its details and copy the encoded output directly from your browser.
Convert Image to Base64
Choose an image to create its Base64 representation. You can copy either the complete Data URL or only the raw Base64 payload.
How to Convert an Image to Base64
ToolZippy’s Image to Base64 converter reads the selected image file in your browser and creates a Base64 representation of its binary data. The result can be copied as a complete Data URL or as the raw Base64 string.
What Is Base64?
Base64 is an encoding method that represents binary data using a limited set of text characters. Images, documents and other binary files can therefore be represented as text when a system or format expects textual data.
Base64 does not improve image quality and it is not an image compression method. It simply changes how the existing binary bytes are represented.
What Is an Image Data URL?
A Data URL combines the image’s media type, the Base64 marker and the encoded image data into one string.
data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUg...
The beginning tells software what kind of data follows. For a PNG image it commonly begins with data:image/png;base64,, while a JPEG image may begin with data:image/jpeg;base64,.
Full Data URL vs Raw Base64
The Full Data URL includes the media-type prefix and can be convenient when a complete Data URL is required.
The Raw Base64 option removes everything before and including the first comma, leaving only the encoded Base64 payload.
Which version you need depends on the application, API, database, HTML field or development workflow receiving the data.
Why Is Base64 Larger Than the Original File?
Base64 normally requires more text characters than the number of bytes in the original binary file. For ordinary Base64 encoding, the encoded payload is approximately one-third larger than the original binary data, before considering the short Data URL prefix.
The exact percentage shown by this tool is calculated from the selected file size and generated Base64 payload rather than assumed from a fixed estimate.
Does Converting to Base64 Change Image Quality?
No image editing or re-encoding is required for this conversion. The browser reads the selected file and represents its existing bytes as Base64 text. Converting those same bytes back correctly should reproduce the original file data.
This is different from resizing, compressing or changing an image format, which can create new image data.
Using Base64 Images in HTML and CSS
Data URLs can be used in some HTML and CSS contexts. For example, an image Data URL may be used where an image source is accepted. This can be useful for small embedded assets or self-contained documents.
However, embedding large images as Base64 can make HTML, CSS, JSON or other text documents significantly larger and harder to read. For normal website photographs and large graphics, separate image files are often easier to cache and maintain.
Should Base64 Be Used to Reduce File Size?
No. Base64 is an encoding format, not an image compressor. If your goal is to reduce the number of bytes used by an image, use the Image Compressor instead.
You can also reduce pixel dimensions first with the Image Resizer when the original image is larger than required.
Converting Base64 Back to an Image
If you already have Base64 image data and want to view it as an image again, use ToolZippy’s Base64 to Image tool.
The reverse tool is particularly useful when you receive an image Data URL from code, an API response or another application and want to verify the encoded image visually.
Browser-Based Processing
The core conversion on this page is designed to use the browser’s FileReader API. The selected file is read as a Data URL and the Base64 text is generated for display on the page without requiring an image-editing operation.
Large files create very long Base64 strings and can require more browser memory. For that reason, this tool is more convenient for small and medium-sized images than extremely large files.

Image to Base64 FAQs
What does the Image to Base64 converter do?
It reads an image file and represents its binary data as Base64 text. You can copy either the complete Data URL or only the raw Base64 payload.
Is Image to Base64 free?
Yes. ToolZippy’s Image to Base64 converter is available for free and does not require an account.
What is the difference between a Data URL and raw Base64?
A Data URL includes information such as the media type and the Base64 marker before the encoded data. Raw Base64 contains only the encoded payload.
Does Base64 reduce image file size?
No. Base64 is an encoding method rather than a compression method. The Base64 payload is normally larger than the original binary data.
Does converting an image to Base64 reduce its quality?
No image re-encoding is required for this conversion. The original file bytes are represented as Base64 text rather than being resampled or recompressed.
Why is the Base64 string so long?
Binary image data requires additional text characters when represented using Base64. Larger source files therefore create longer encoded strings.
Can I copy only the Base64 part without the Data URL prefix?
Yes. Select the Raw Base64 option to display only the encoded payload without the data type and Base64 prefix.
Can I download the Base64 output?
Yes. The Download TXT button saves the currently displayed Base64 output as a plain-text file.
Can I convert Base64 back into an image?
Yes. Use ToolZippy’s Base64 to Image tool when you have compatible Base64 image data that you want to preview as an image.
Does the conversion run in my browser?
The core conversion on this page is designed to use browser-side JavaScript and the FileReader API to read the selected file as a Data URL.
