📐 What Is Image Aspect Ratio?

An image’s aspect ratio describes the proportional relationship between its width and height. It is normally written as two numbers separated by a colon, such as 16:9, 4:3 or 1:1.

The ratio describes the image’s shape rather than its absolute pixel size. This means 1920 × 1080, 1280 × 720 and 640 × 360 all share the same 16:9 aspect ratio.

ƒ How to Calculate Aspect Ratio

For whole-number pixel dimensions, the width and height can be simplified by dividing both numbers by their greatest common divisor (GCD).

Aspect Ratio = Width ÷ GCD : Height ÷ GCD For 1920 × 1080, the greatest common divisor is 120.

Dividing both dimensions by 120 gives:

1920 ÷ 120 : 1080 ÷ 120 = 16 : 9

16:9 Example: 1920 × 1080

A 1920-pixel-wide image with a height of 1080 pixels has a simplified aspect ratio of 16:9. Its decimal width-to-height ratio is approximately 1.7778.

1920 × 1080 16:9 • Landscape
1080 × 1080 1:1 • Square
1080 × 1350 4:5 • Portrait

▦ Common Image Aspect Ratios

Aspect Ratio Example Dimensions Shape / Common Context
1:1 1080 × 1080 Square
4:3 1600 × 1200 Traditional photo/display format
3:2 1500 × 1000 Common photography proportion
16:9 1920 × 1080 Widescreen video and displays
16:10 1920 × 1200 Computer displays
4:5 1080 × 1350 Portrait-oriented image
9:16 1080 × 1920 Vertical video / portrait display
21:9 2560 × 1080 Ultrawide format

Example dimensions are illustrations of the listed proportions. A platform or project may require specific pixel dimensions, file sizes or cropping rules in addition to an aspect ratio.

↔ Aspect Ratio vs Image Dimensions

Image dimensions tell you the actual width and height in pixels. Aspect ratio tells you the relationship between those two dimensions.

For example, both 1920 × 1080 and 3840 × 2160 have a 16:9 aspect ratio even though the second image contains many more pixels.

1.78 What Is the Decimal Aspect Ratio?

The decimal ratio is calculated by dividing width by height:

Decimal Ratio = Width ÷ Height 1920 ÷ 1080 ≈ 1.7778

The decimal value is useful for comparing proportions that may not simplify to the same obvious whole-number ratio.

↗ Landscape, Portrait and Square

  • Landscape: width is greater than height.
  • Portrait: height is greater than width.
  • Square: width and height are equal.

ToolZippy identifies the orientation automatically after you enter the dimensions.

🔒 How to Resize Without Distorting an Image

To resize an image without changing its proportions, keep the same width-to-height ratio.

If you know the new width:

New Height = New Width × Original Height ÷ Original Width

If you know the new height:

New Width = New Height × Original Width ÷ Original Height

The resize helper in the calculator performs these calculations for you.

1280 Resize Example

Suppose an image is 1920 × 1080 and you want to reduce its width to 1280 pixels while preserving its 16:9 ratio:

1280 × 1080 ÷ 1920 = 720 The matching dimensions are 1280 × 720.

✂ Aspect Ratio and Cropping

If the required output ratio differs from the original image ratio, simply changing both dimensions independently can stretch or squash the image. Cropping is often used instead when the goal is to change the frame shape while keeping objects proportional.

If you only want to change the pixel dimensions while keeping the existing proportions, use the Image Resizer.

▣ Why Use an Aspect Ratio Calculator?

  • Check the proportions of website images.
  • Prepare thumbnails and featured images.
  • Compare landscape, portrait and square formats.
  • Plan image resizing without stretching.
  • Check video-frame proportions.
  • Calculate matching width or height values.
  • Compare an image with common aspect ratios.
  • Understand dimensions supplied by a designer or platform.

📁 Reading Dimensions from an Image

You can optionally select an image from your device. The page uses browser image features to read the image’s intrinsic width and height and then places those values into the calculator.

No image editing is required to calculate its aspect ratio. The tool only needs the width and height values.

? Image Aspect Ratio FAQs

How do I calculate an image aspect ratio?

Divide the width and height by their greatest common divisor. For example, 1920 × 1080 simplifies to 16:9.

What is the aspect ratio of 1920 × 1080?

1920 × 1080 has an aspect ratio of 16:9. Its decimal width-to-height ratio is approximately 1.7778.

What is the aspect ratio of 1080 × 1080?

Because the width and height are equal, 1080 × 1080 has a 1:1 square aspect ratio.

What is the aspect ratio of 1080 × 1920?

1080 × 1920 simplifies to 9:16, a portrait or vertical proportion.

Does changing image size change the aspect ratio?

Not if the width and height are changed proportionally. For example, 1920 × 1080 and 1280 × 720 are both 16:9.

How do I resize an image without stretching it?

Keep the original aspect ratio. If you change the width, calculate the corresponding height from the original width-to-height relationship, or vice versa.

What is the difference between aspect ratio and resolution?

Aspect ratio describes the proportional shape of an image. Pixel dimensions describe its width and height. Different pixel dimensions can share the same aspect ratio.

Can this calculator read the dimensions of my image?

Yes. You can select a supported image and the calculator will attempt to read its intrinsic width and height using browser image features.

Is the Image Aspect Ratio Calculator free?

Yes. ToolZippy’s Image Aspect Ratio Calculator is free to use without creating an account.
