How the FLAMES Method Works
The calculator follows the traditional name-cancellation and FLAMES elimination process.
1. Clean Both Names
Spaces, numbers and punctuation are removed so the current calculator compares English alphabetic letters from the two names. Uppercase and lowercase letters are treated the same.
2. Cancel Matching Letters
Letters appearing in both names are cancelled one pair at a time. The unmatched letters left across both names are then counted.
3. Eliminate FLAMES
The remaining-letter count is repeatedly applied to the letters F-L-A-M-E-S until only one relationship category remains.

The ToolZippy FLAMES Calculator uses the classic FLAMES name game to compare two names. FLAMES stands for Friendship, Love, Affection, Marriage, Enemies and Siblings. Rather than selecting a random category, this calculator follows a repeatable letter-cancellation and counting process, so the same spellings produce the same result.
The calculation begins by cleaning both names. Matching letters are then removed one pair at a time. The number of unmatched letters remaining across both names becomes the count used in the FLAMES elimination sequence. The process continues until one of the six FLAMES letters remains.
F What Does FLAMES Stand For?
The six letters represent the traditional categories: F for Friendship, L for Love, A for Affection, M for Marriage, E for Enemies and S for Siblings. The final remaining letter determines the category displayed by the calculator.
FLAMES is a traditional name game. ToolZippy automates the letter cancellation and circular counting so you do not need to cross out letters or manually track each elimination.
✂ How Matching Letters Are Removed
When the same letter occurs in both names, one copy from the first name and one copy from the second name are cancelled. If a letter appears multiple times, cancellation continues only while a matching copy remains in both names.
For example, if one name contains two copies of a letter and the other contains only one, only one pair is removed. The extra copy remains and contributes to the final unmatched-letter count.
Capitalization does not affect the calculation. The current ToolZippy implementation uses English A–Z letters and removes spaces, hyphens, apostrophes, numbers and other characters before performing the comparison.
↻ How the FLAMES Elimination Works
After the unmatched-letter count is calculated, the six FLAMES letters are placed in sequence. Counting moves around the sequence using the unmatched-letter total. The selected FLAMES letter is removed and counting continues from the next available position.
This circular elimination repeats until only one letter remains. That final letter is translated into Friendship, Love, Affection, Marriage, Enemies or Siblings.
Because the calculation depends on the exact letters entered, changing the spelling of either name can change which letters cancel, the unmatched-letter count and therefore the final FLAMES category.
