How to Add a Watermark to an Image Online

A watermark is text or a graphic placed over an image to identify its creator, communicate ownership information, display a brand, or indicate that an image is a draft or sample. ToolZippy provides a browser-based watermark editor that lets you customize the appearance before downloading the result.

01 Upload Image Select your photo, graphic or document image.
02 Add Watermark Enter text or upload a transparent logo.
03 Customize Adjust size, opacity, placement and rotation.
04 Download Export your image as PNG, JPG or WebP.

Text Watermarks and Logo Watermarks

Text watermarks are suitable for a photographer’s name, copyright notice, website address, company name, or document status such as “Draft” or “Sample.” Logo watermarks use an uploaded graphic and are particularly useful for consistent branding.

For logo watermarking, use a transparent PNG where possible. A logo with a solid background may appear as a visible rectangle over the image.

Choosing the Right Watermark Position

The editor provides nine preset positions, including corners, edge centers and the image center. You can also drag a single watermark directly in the preview. Corner placement is often suitable for branding because it interferes less with the main subject.

A centered watermark is more prominent and may be preferable for preview images or samples, but it can obscure important details. Review the result carefully before downloading.

Watermark Opacity, Size and Rotation

Opacity controls transparency. A lower value allows more of the original image to show through, while a higher value makes the watermark more visible. The best setting depends on image contrast and the purpose of the watermark.

Watermark size is scaled relative to image width. Rotation lets you create angled text or logos, including diagonal labels for drafts and previews. For subtle branding, use a smaller watermark with limited rotation and sufficient contrast.

Repeated Watermarks for Image Previews

The Repeat Text Across Image option creates a tiled watermark pattern. This can be useful when sharing sample photographs, proof images, or previews that should be clearly identified. Tiled watermarks may reduce image readability, so they are not suitable for every use case.

PNG, JPG and WebP: Which Format Is Best?

  • PNG: Suitable for graphics, screenshots and images requiring transparency. Uses lossless compression.
  • JPG: Common for photographs and compatible with many applications. Uses lossy compression and does not support transparency.
  • WebP: Supports efficient image compression and transparency, although compatibility depends on the application.

The editor exports using the decoded source image’s pixel dimensions, subject to browser limitations. Exporting may change the original file’s encoding, metadata or file size.

Can Watermarks Protect Images from Copying?

Watermarks can identify an image or discourage unauthorized reuse, but they cannot guarantee protection against copying, cropping or editing. Adding a watermark does not establish legal copyright ownership. Use the tool only with images you are authorized to edit.

Privacy and Local Image Processing

ToolZippy uses browser-side image processing for watermark creation. The watermark operation does not require uploading the selected image to a processing server. Other website services, including analytics or advertising, may operate separately.

Professional tip: Keep a copy of your original image. For product photographs, choose a watermark position that does not cover important product features. For portfolio samples, consider a more visible watermark.
