Energy & Cost Breakdown
The load factor is an assumed average share of rated input power while operating, not a thermostat setting or guaranteed duty cycle. Seasonal totals assume identical months; taxes and fixed fees are excluded.
What Affects Your AC Electricity Bill?
Air conditioning expenses depend on equipment efficiency, actual power consumption, operating conditions and electricity tariffs.
Cooling Equipment
Compare electrical input power for different AC units, rather than assuming all units of the same cooling capacity consume equal energy.
Operating Schedule
Estimate how daily hours and monthly operating days affect your cooling electricity expenses.
Seasonal Budget

AC Running Cost Calculator: Formula & Complete Guide
Air conditioning can be a significant part of household or office electricity consumption, particularly during hot weather. The AC Running Cost Calculator estimates expenses using the electrical input power of the air conditioner, an assumed average operating load, daily operating time and your electricity price.
How to Calculate AC Electricity Cost
Convert the AC’s electrical input power into kilowatts, adjust it by the assumed average operating load, and multiply by the hours used and the electricity tariff.
Worked Example: 1,500-Watt Air Conditioner
- Electrical input power: 1,500 W (1.5 kW)
- Average operating load: 80%
- Operating hours: 8 per day
- Operating days: 30 per month
- Electricity price: $0.20 per kWh
- Standby consumption: 0 W
Effective power = 1.5 × 0.80 = 1.2 kW.
Daily energy = 1.2 × 8 = 9.6 kWh.
Monthly energy = 9.6 × 30 = 288 kWh.
Monthly electricity cost = 288 × $0.20 = $57.60.
For six identical months, estimated cooling-season cost = $345.60.
Is AC Cooling Capacity the Same as Electrical Power?
No. Cooling capacity describes the amount of heat an air conditioner can remove, commonly expressed in BTU/h, kilowatts of cooling or tons of refrigeration. Electrical input power describes how much electricity the equipment consumes. A 1.5-ton AC should not automatically be entered as 1.5 kW of electrical power.
How Much Electricity Does a 1.5-Ton AC Use?
There is no single electrical consumption figure for every 1.5-ton air conditioner. Different models have different efficiencies, operating modes and compressor technologies. Check the manufacturer’s electrical input rating or measured consumption rather than converting cooling tons directly into electrical kilowatts.
What Does Average Operating Load Mean?
The average operating load is a scenario assumption representing the proportion of rated electrical input consumed during the hours entered. For example, 80% of a 1,500 W input corresponds to an average of 1,200 W. It is not the thermostat temperature, compressor duty cycle or a guaranteed efficiency measurement.
Inverter AC vs Non-Inverter AC
Many inverter air conditioners can vary compressor speed as cooling demand changes. Fixed-speed units typically cycle their compressors. Actual electricity use for either system depends on equipment design, installation, indoor temperature, outdoor conditions and operating patterns. For more accurate estimates, use measured average input power.
How Does Thermostat Temperature Affect Cost?
Thermostat settings influence cooling demand, but the relationship between temperature and electricity use is not a fixed percentage. Room insulation, humidity, outdoor temperature and occupancy also matter. This calculator does not predict consumption from thermostat temperature alone.
How Can I Calculate AC Cost per Hour?
Multiply the effective electrical power in kilowatts by the electricity price per kWh. For a 1.2 kW average operating input at $0.20/kWh, the estimated active running cost is $0.24 per hour.
Does an AC Consume Electricity While in Standby?
Some air conditioners use a small amount of electricity for control electronics or connected functions while not actively cooling. If you know the standby power, enter it separately with the relevant standby hours. Enter zero when standby consumption is unknown or not applicable.
Why Might My Actual AC Bill Be Different?
Actual power consumption can change throughout the day because of compressor operation, outdoor heat, humidity, insulation, air filters and occupancy. Your utility may also charge tiered rates, taxes and fixed service fees. This calculator uses one flat electricity rate and simplified operating assumptions.
How Can I Reduce Air Conditioner Electricity Use?
Maintain clean filters, avoid unnecessary cooling, improve insulation and reduce unwanted heat entering the room. Use equipment settings appropriate for comfort and follow the manufacturer’s maintenance guidance. Compare actual meter readings when evaluating changes.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to run an AC for 8 hours?
Multiply its average electrical input in kilowatts by eight hours and the electricity price per kWh. For example, 1.2 kW at $0.20/kWh costs approximately $1.92 for eight operating hours.
How do I calculate monthly AC electricity cost?
Multiply average electrical power by daily operating hours, days per month and electricity price. Include standby energy if relevant.
Can I calculate AC running cost in AED?
Yes. Select AED and enter your electricity rate in UAE dirhams per kWh. The calculator does not retrieve live tariffs or convert currencies.
Does this work for inverter air conditioners?
Yes, as an estimate. Use a realistic average operating load or measured power consumption, since inverter AC power can vary substantially.
Can I calculate costs for multiple AC units?
Yes. Enter the number of identical units using the same power and operating schedule. Calculate different models separately.
Does it include fixed electricity bill charges?
No. It estimates energy charges using the electricity rate entered. Taxes, tiered rates and utility service fees are excluded.
Is a 1.5-ton AC the same as a 1.5 kW AC?
No. Tons measure cooling capacity, while kilowatts in this calculator refer to electrical input power. Check the unit’s electrical specifications.
Can I estimate cooling-season electricity expenses?
Yes. Enter the number of months in the cooling season. The calculator assumes the same monthly operating schedule and electricity rate throughout those months.
