VAT MATH MADE SIMPLE

VAT calculation formulas

Understand how VAT is added to or extracted from a price.

Adding VAT

VAT = Net Price × (VAT Rate ÷ 100) Gross Price = Net Price + VAT

Example: 100.00 plus 20% VAT gives 20.00 VAT and a gross price of 120.00.

Removing VAT

Net Price = Gross Price ÷ (1 + VAT Rate ÷ 100) VAT = Gross Price − Net Price

Example: A gross price of 120.00 including 20% VAT contains 20.00 VAT.

VAT EXPLAINED

Understanding Value Added Tax

Learn the difference between net prices, gross prices and VAT-inclusive amounts.

What is VAT?

Value Added Tax (VAT) is a consumption tax applied to qualifying goods and services in many countries. Businesses may collect VAT from customers and account for it under the rules of the relevant tax authority.

VAT-inclusive vs VAT-exclusive prices

A VAT-exclusive price is the amount before VAT. A VAT-inclusive price already contains VAT. The Add VAT mode calculates a gross price, while Remove VAT extracts the VAT from a gross amount.

Why VAT rates differ

VAT rates depend on the country, product or service, applicable exemptions and tax rules. Some supplies may be zero-rated, exempt or subject to reduced rates.

VAT on discounted purchases

In Add VAT mode, the optional discount is applied before VAT. The correct VAT treatment of vouchers, discounts and promotions can vary by jurisdiction.

Can I calculate several items?

Yes. Enter each item’s net price and quantity. The calculator combines them before applying the selected discount and single VAT rate.

Is this an official VAT invoice?

No. This is a calculation tool, not an invoice issuance or tax-compliance system. Official VAT invoices may require registration details, tax identification numbers and prescribed fields.

HELP & ANSWERS

VAT Calculator FAQs

How do I add VAT to a price?

Multiply the net price by the VAT rate as a decimal, then add the resulting tax to the net price.

How do I remove VAT from a price?

Divide the gross price by 1 plus the VAT rate as a decimal. Subtract the net price from the gross price to find the included VAT.

Can I use any VAT rate?

Yes. Enter the applicable rate manually. The quick-rate buttons are illustrative shortcuts.

Does changing the currency convert the amount?

No. Currency selection changes the formatting and currency symbol only. No foreign-exchange conversion is performed.

Can I calculate VAT on multiple items?

Yes. Add item prices and quantities in Add VAT mode. All items are assumed taxable at the same VAT rate.

Does this calculator support discounts?

Yes. In Add VAT mode, an optional percentage discount reduces the net subtotal before VAT.

What is the difference between net and gross?

Net means before VAT. Gross means including VAT.

Is VAT the same in every country?

No. VAT rates, exemptions, special schemes and tax procedures differ by jurisdiction.

Can I use the result for a tax return?

This tool is for arithmetic estimates. Tax reporting should follow official rules and appropriate accounting records.

Why might a business invoice differ?

Invoice-level and line-level rounding, special rates, exemptions or other transaction rules can produce differences.
