Simple Interest Calculator
Calculate simple interest and the final amount from a principal, annual interest rate and time period. Compare years, months or days without compounding.
Calculate Simple Interest
Enter the original principal, annual rate and duration. The calculator converts the selected time unit to years before applying the simple-interest formula.
Principal plus simple interest over the selected period.
| Period | Principal | Interest Added | Total Interest | Amount |

What Is Simple Interest?
Simple interest calculates interest using the original principal throughout the entire time period. Previously accumulated interest is not added to the principal for the purpose of calculating later interest.
That makes simple interest different from compound interest, where interest can itself become part of the balance used for future interest calculations.
I = P × r × t
In this formula, I is interest, P is principal, r is the annual interest rate written as a decimal, and t is time in years.
A = P + I
Simple Interest Example
Suppose the principal is $1,000, the annual simple interest rate is 5%, and the time period is 3 years.
5% = 0.05
$1,000 × 0.05 × 3 = $150
$1,000 + $150 = $1,150
Using Years, Months or Days
The standard simple-interest formula uses time in years. This calculator lets you enter the duration in years, months or days and converts it to a year value before calculating the interest.
- Years: used directly.
- Months: divided by 12.
- Days: divided by 365.
For example, 6 months is treated as 0.5 years. At 6% simple interest, a $2,000 principal for six months produces:
$2,000 × 0.06 × 0.5 = $60 interest
This calculator uses 365 days per year for its general day conversion. Some financial agreements use other conventions, such as 360-day years or actual-day methods. Check the terms of a real financial product before relying on a day-based result.
Simple Interest vs Compound Interest
The key difference is what balance is used to calculate future interest.
With simple interest, the calculation continues to use the original principal. With compound interest, accumulated interest may be added to the balance, allowing future interest to be calculated on both the original principal and previous interest.
For compounding scenarios, use the Compound Interest Calculator.
Understanding the Interest Schedule
The schedule shows how simple interest accumulates over time. Because the original principal remains the calculation base, the interest added during each full year is the same when the annual rate does not change.
For example, a $1,000 principal at 5% simple interest adds $50 for each complete year. After three years, total interest is $150.
If the selected period contains a partial year, the final schedule row uses that fraction of a year rather than treating it as another complete year.
What Does Total Return Mean Here?
The Total Return result on this calculator is the simple interest earned or charged over the full selected period expressed as a percentage of the original principal.
Total return (%) = Interest ÷ Principal × 100
For a fixed 5% annual simple rate over three years, the total simple return is 15%. This is not an annualized compound return and should not be interpreted as an investment performance forecast.
Currency Selection
The currency selector changes how monetary results are labeled. It does not perform foreign-exchange conversion.
For example, if you enter 10,000 and choose AED, the calculator treats the principal as AED 10,000. Switching the display to dollars changes the label only; it does not convert the value using an exchange rate.
Keep all monetary values in the same currency when using the calculator.
Common Uses of Simple Interest
Simple interest calculations can be useful for:
- mathematics and finance exercises;
- comparing non-compounding interest scenarios;
- checking simple loan examples;
- estimating interest over short periods;
- basic savings examples where simple interest actually applies;
- verifying a manual simple-interest calculation.
Real financial products may include fees, changing rates, payment schedules, taxes, compounding rules or special day-count conventions that are not represented by this basic formula.
Important Calculation Assumptions
The calculator assumes that the annual rate remains constant and that interest is calculated only on the original principal.
It does not automatically account for:
- compound interest;
- loan repayments or deposits during the period;
- fees or penalties;
- taxes;
- changing interest rates;
- inflation;
- special contractual day-count methods.
Use the result to understand or check a simple-interest calculation. For an actual loan, investment, deposit or financial agreement, use the calculation method and terms specified by the relevant provider or contract.
Browser-Based Calculation
The Simple Interest Calculator is designed to perform its calculation in your browser using the values you enter. No account is required to use the calculator.
Displayed monetary results can be rounded according to the decimal setting you choose. The underlying calculation uses the numeric values entered before the result is formatted for display.
Simple Interest Calculator FAQs
What is the formula for simple interest?
The standard formula is I = P × r × t, where I is interest, P is principal, r is the annual interest rate expressed as a decimal, and t is time in years.
How do I calculate the final amount with simple interest?
First calculate the simple interest, then add it to the original principal. The final amount formula is A = P + I.
What is the simple interest on $1,000 at 5% for 3 years?
The interest is $150 because $1,000 × 0.05 × 3 = $150. The final amount is $1,150.
Does simple interest compound?
No. In a simple-interest calculation, accumulated interest is not added to the principal for calculating future interest.
Can I calculate simple interest for months?
Yes. This calculator converts months to years by dividing the number of months by 12 before applying the simple-interest formula.
Can I calculate simple interest for days?
Yes. For its general day conversion, this calculator divides the number of days by 365. Actual financial agreements may use a different day-count convention.
What is principal?
Principal is the original amount on which the simple interest is calculated.
What is the difference between simple and compound interest?
Simple interest is calculated using the original principal. Compound interest can calculate future interest on a balance that includes previously accumulated interest.
Does changing the currency convert the amount?
No. The currency selector changes the display label only. It does not perform foreign-exchange conversion.
Is the ToolZippy Simple Interest Calculator free?
Yes. The calculator is free to use and does not require an account.
