Random Number Generator
Generate one or more random integers inside any inclusive range. Choose whether duplicates are allowed, sort the output, reroll instantly and copy the generated numbers.
Generate Random Numbers
Set the minimum and maximum integer, choose how many results you want, then customize duplicates and sorting.
Choose your range and generate a random integer.
How the Random Number Generator Works
The generator first determines the set of whole numbers from your minimum through your maximum. Both endpoints are included.
For example, a range from 1 to 5 contains:
ToolZippy then uses randomness supplied by the browser to select integers from that range. When duplicates are allowed, each draw is independent and the same integer can appear more than once.
When duplicates are disabled, the tool selects without replacement: once a number has been selected for that result set, it cannot appear again.
Repeated values, clusters and gaps can occur naturally in random selections. Over a small number of draws, there is no requirement for every available number to appear equally often.
Inclusive Minimum and Maximum
The minimum and maximum are both eligible to be generated. If you enter a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 20, there are 11 possible integers:
The generator works with negative integers too. For example, a range from −3 through 3 contains seven possibilities: −3, −2, −1, 0, 1, 2 and 3.
Duplicates vs No Duplicates
Turning off duplicates is useful when you want a simple selection without replacement—for example, choosing several different item numbers from a list.
Common Uses
A general-purpose random integer generator can be useful whenever you need an informal numerical selection rather than a manually chosen number.
- Pick a number for a game or casual activity.
- Create sample integers for spreadsheet practice.
- Generate informal test inputs for software or formulas.
- Select numbered classroom questions or exercises.
- Choose between items that have been assigned numbers.
- Simulate common dice ranges such as 1–6 or 1–20.
- Create multiple unique numbers when repeats are not wanted.
For formal competitions, regulated drawings or systems that require auditable randomness, use a method designed for that specific purpose rather than a general browser utility.
Dice and Simple Simulations
A numbered die can be represented by an integer range. A standard six-sided die corresponds to 1 through 6, while a 20-sided die corresponds to 1 through 20.
The quick buttons above include D6 and D20 presets for convenience. This page generates the individual random integers; it does not automatically add several dice together.
Browser Randomness and Important Limitations
This tool attempts to use the browser’s Web Crypto API when it is available. That gives the generator access to browser-provided cryptographically strong random values for the integer-selection process.
If that API is unavailable, the page falls back to JavaScript’s standard pseudorandom generator so the everyday tool can still operate.
This general-purpose interface is not designed to generate passwords, cryptographic keys, authentication tokens, recovery codes, gambling outcomes, official lottery results, regulated contest drawings or other security-critical or audited random values.
The distinction matters because a useful casual random-number tool and a formally validated random-number system have different requirements.
Tips for Better Use
- Use whole numbers for the minimum and maximum because this tool generates integers.
- Remember that both ends of the range are included.
- Leave duplicates enabled when repeated results are acceptable.
- Disable duplicates when every result must be different.
- Use sorting only to organize the display; sorting happens after generation and does not change which numbers were selected.
- Select Generate Again to create a fresh result using the same settings.
- Use Copy Results when you want to paste the numbers into another document or app.
Browser Processing
The number generation is designed to happen with JavaScript in your browser. The values entered into this tool do not need to be submitted to a separate calculation service solely to generate the result.
That statement applies to this tool’s generation logic. Normal website services such as hosting, security, analytics, consent systems or advertising technologies may operate separately according to ToolZippy’s site policies.
Random Number Generator FAQs
Are the minimum and maximum both included?
Yes. A range of 1 to 10 can generate any integer from 1 through 10, including both 1 and 10.
Can I generate more than one random number?
Yes. You can request from 1 to 100 results in one generation.
Can the same number appear more than once?
Yes when Allow duplicates is enabled. Turn that option off if you want every generated number in the result set to be different.
Why can’t I request more unique numbers?
Without duplicates, the requested count cannot exceed the number of available integers. For example, 1 through 5 contains only five unique integers.
Can I generate negative random numbers?
Yes. Both the minimum and maximum can be negative integers, and a range can also cross zero.
Does sorting make the numbers less random?
Sorting only changes the order in which the already-selected numbers are displayed. It does not change which values were generated.
Can I use it like a dice roller?
Yes for simple integer results. Use 1–6 for a six-sided die or 1–20 for a 20-sided die. Keep duplicates enabled when generating several independent dice values.
Why did I get the same number again?
Repeated results are possible in random selection. If duplicates are allowed, receiving the same number in consecutive draws does not by itself indicate a problem.
Is this suitable for passwords or security keys?
No. This page is a general-purpose random integer utility and should not be used as a password, cryptographic-key, authentication-token or security-code generator.
Is this suitable for an official lottery or regulated drawing?
No. Formal or regulated drawings may require specific procedures, auditing, certification or approved random-selection systems. Use a system appropriate to those requirements.
