📘 How to Convert Minutes to Hours

There are 60 minutes in one hour. To convert minutes to hours, divide the number of minutes by 60.

MINUTES TO HOURS FORMULA Hours = Minutes ÷ 60

For example, 150 minutes ÷ 60 = 2.5 hours.

🕒 Decimal Hours vs Hours and Minutes

A decimal-hour value is not written in the same way as a clock duration. For example, 2.5 hours means 2 hours plus half an hour. Since half an hour is 30 minutes, 2.5 hours equals 2 hours 30 minutes.

This calculator shows both formats so you do not have to convert the decimal portion manually.

90 MINUTES 1.5 hr
1h 30m
135 MINUTES 2.25 hr
2h 15m
150 MINUTES 2.5 hr
2h 30m

✓ Worked Example: 135 Minutes to Hours

To convert 135 minutes to hours, divide 135 by 60:

EXAMPLE 135 ÷ 60 = 2.25 hours

The whole-number portion is 2 hours. The remaining 0.25 hour is 15 minutes, so 135 minutes is also 2 hours 15 minutes.

📊 Common Minutes to Hours Conversions

Minutes Decimal Hours Hours & Minutes
15 min 0.25 hr 0h 15m
30 min 0.5 hr 0h 30m
45 min 0.75 hr 0h 45m
60 min 1 hr 1h 0m
75 min 1.25 hr 1h 15m
90 min 1.5 hr 1h 30m
120 min 2 hr 2h 0m
135 min 2.25 hr 2h 15m
150 min 2.5 hr 2h 30m
180 min 3 hr 3h 0m
480 min 8 hr 8h 0m

⚠️ Why 1.30 Hours Is Not 1 Hour 30 Minutes

This is a common source of confusion. Decimal hours use base-10 decimals, while an hour contains 60 minutes.

For example, 1.30 decimal hours means 1 hour plus 0.30 of an hour:

DECIMAL-HOUR EXAMPLE 0.30 × 60 = 18 minutes

Therefore, 1.30 decimal hours equals 1 hour 18 minutes, not 1 hour 30 minutes.

💼 Work and Timesheet Calculations

Decimal hours are often useful when durations need to be added, multiplied or entered into a calculation. For example, 7 hours 30 minutes can be represented as 7.5 hours.

However, workplace payroll and timesheet systems may have their own rounding policies. Converting time accurately does not determine how an employer rounds or pays recorded working time.

📚 Study, Exercise and Activity Time

Minutes-to-hours conversion can make longer durations easier to compare. A 150-minute study session is 2.5 hours, while 210 minutes is 3.5 hours.

Showing both decimal hours and hours-plus-minutes is especially useful when one format is better for calculations and the other is easier to read as elapsed time.

↔ How to Convert Hours Back to Minutes

🎯 Rounding Decimal Hours

Some minute values produce repeating decimal hours. For example, 20 minutes equals 0.333333… hours. The calculator keeps the mathematical calculation internally and displays a practical number of decimal places.

Important: Rounding a decimal-hour result can slightly change the equivalent number of minutes. When precision matters, keep additional decimal places until the final calculation.
