How to Use the Image Color Picker
ToolZippy’s Image Color Picker lets you inspect the color of an individual pixel in an uploaded image. Instead of estimating a color visually, you can click the exact location and read its color values.
What Is a HEX Color?
HEX is a common way to represent RGB colors using hexadecimal numbers. A standard six-digit HEX color begins with a hash sign followed by two digits for red, two for green and two for blue.
HEX color codes are widely used in CSS, websites, interface designs and other digital design workflows.
What Is an RGB Color?
RGB represents a color through its red, green and blue channel values. In the common 8-bit representation used by this picker, each channel ranges from 0 to 255.
What Is HSL?
HSL describes a color using hue, saturation and lightness. Hue is represented as an angle around the color wheel, while saturation and lightness are percentages.
HSL can be convenient when adjusting a color because changing lightness or saturation can be more intuitive than editing individual RGB channels.
How Pixel Color Picking Works
When the image loads, ToolZippy draws it to an HTML canvas using its original pixel dimensions. The browser may visually scale that canvas to fit the page.
When you click the displayed image, the tool converts the on-screen click position back to the corresponding coordinate inside the full canvas and reads the RGBA pixel data at that location.
Why Can Nearby Pixels Have Different Colors?
Photos often contain thousands or millions of slightly different colors. Lighting, shadows, compression, antialiasing, gradients and camera noise can cause adjacent pixels to have different RGB values even when they look almost identical to the eye.
For that reason, clicking two nearby locations may produce slightly different color codes.
Common Color Code Examples
Using Picked Colors in CSS
Once you have copied a HEX, RGB or HSL value, you can use it in CSS properties such as text color, backgrounds and borders.
background-color: rgb(37, 99, 235);
border-color: hsl(221, 83%, 53%); These formats can describe the same or very similar displayed color using different notation.
What About Transparent Pixels?
Canvas pixel data also includes an alpha channel that describes opacity. This version of the picker reports HEX, RGB and HSL from the red, green and blue channels.
If a PNG contains transparent or partly transparent pixels, the visible appearance can depend on the background behind the image. The reported RGB components therefore should not be confused with the final composited appearance on every possible background.
Browser-Based Image Reading
This implementation is designed to load the selected local image through browser object-URL and canvas features. Pixel sampling and color conversion are performed by the JavaScript running on the page rather than requiring a server-side color analysis step.
Very large images can require more browser memory, especially on older mobile devices.
Useful Ways to Use an Image Color Picker
- Identify a color from a logo or graphic.
- Match a website element to an existing image.
- Find a background or accent color from a photograph.
- Inspect colors while creating social media graphics.
- Copy HEX values for CSS and web design.
- Read RGB values for digital graphics.
- Compare nearby pixels in gradients or photographs.
The picker reads an individual image pixel. A photograph may contain many neighboring shades, so one sampled pixel should not automatically be treated as the single representative color of an entire object or area.
Image Color Picker FAQs
How do I pick a color from an image?
Upload an image, load it into the picker and click or tap the location you want to inspect. The tool displays the selected pixel’s HEX, RGB and HSL values.
Can I copy the HEX color code?
Yes. After selecting a pixel, use the copy button beside the HEX result to copy the color code.
Does the picker also show RGB colors?
Yes. The tool displays the red, green and blue values of the selected pixel in RGB format.
Does the tool show HSL values?
Yes. The selected RGB color is also converted to hue, saturation and lightness values.
Why do nearby pixels sometimes have different HEX codes?
Photos and compressed graphics can contain subtle pixel-level variations caused by lighting, gradients, antialiasing, compression and other image characteristics.
Does the tool change my uploaded image?
No. The image is loaded into a canvas so you can inspect its pixels. The color picker does not intentionally modify the original file.
Can I use the Image Color Picker on mobile?
Yes. The tool is designed for modern mobile and desktop browsers. On a touchscreen, tap the image to select a pixel.
What image formats can I use?
Support depends on the browser, but common browser-supported formats such as JPG, PNG and WebP can normally be loaded.
Is the ToolZippy Image Color Picker free?
Yes. The Image Color Picker is free to use without creating an account.
