Estimated Maximum Heart Rate 190 bpm

Using 220 − 30 = 190 bpm.

Zone 1
50–60% OF ESTIMATED MAX
95–114 bpm 50–60%
Zone 2
60–70% OF ESTIMATED MAX
114–133 bpm 60–70%
Zone 3
70–80% OF ESTIMATED MAX
133–152 bpm 70–80%
Zone 4
80–90% OF ESTIMATED MAX
152–171 bpm 80–90%
Zone 5
90–100% OF ESTIMATED MAX
171–190 bpm 90–100%

For age 30, the simple 220 − age model estimates a maximum heart rate of 190 bpm. Actual maximum heart rate and appropriate training intensity can differ between individuals.

📘 How to Use the Heart Rate Zone Calculator

  1. Enter your age in years.
  2. Select Calculate Zones.
  3. Review the estimated maximum heart rate.
  4. Check the five BPM ranges from Zone 1 through Zone 5.
  5. Use the percentages to understand how each range was calculated.

You can enter another age and calculate again at any time. The Reset button restores the example age of 30.

ƒ Heart Rate Zone Formula

This calculator keeps the simple method used by this ToolZippy tool: first estimate maximum heart rate from age, then calculate each zone as a percentage of that estimated maximum.

Estimated Maximum Heart Rate = 220 − Age Training zones = percentage × estimated maximum heart rate

1 Example for a 30-Year-Old

For someone aged 30, the calculation is:

220 − 30 = 190 bpm Estimated maximum heart rate using this simple model

Zone 2 in this calculator covers 60% to 70% of the estimated maximum. Using 190 bpm:

190 × 0.60 = 114 bpm   •   190 × 0.70 = 133 bpm Estimated Zone 2 range: 114–133 bpm

♥ The Five Heart Rate Zones

Zone 1 50–60% of estimated maximum
Zone 2 60–70% of estimated maximum
Zone 3 70–80% of estimated maximum
Zone 4 80–90% of estimated maximum
Zone 5 90–100% of estimated maximum
Zone % of Estimated Max Calculator Meaning
Zone 1 50–60% Lowest percentage range shown by this calculator
Zone 2 60–70% Second percentage range
Zone 3 70–80% Middle percentage range
Zone 4 80–90% Higher percentage range
Zone 5 90–100% Highest percentage range shown

The zone labels here describe percentage bands generated by this calculator. They should not be interpreted as personalized training prescriptions.

? Is 220 Minus Age Exact?

No. The 220 − age equation is a simple age-based estimate. An individual’s actual maximum heart rate can differ from the number produced by the formula.

That means the BPM boundaries calculated from it are estimates as well. Two people of the same age do not necessarily have the same true maximum heart rate or the same appropriate exercise intensity.

⌚ Why Might a Fitness Watch Show Different Zones?

A watch, fitness app or exercise machine may use a different maximum-heart-rate equation, measured heart-rate information, resting heart rate, customized settings, or different zone percentages. Its displayed ranges therefore may not match this calculator.

When comparing numbers, check both the maximum-heart-rate method and the percentage boundaries being used.

BPM What Does BPM Mean?

BPM means beats per minute. Heart rate is commonly expressed as the number of heartbeats measured during one minute.

This calculator reports every zone boundary in BPM after applying the selected percentage to the estimated maximum heart rate.

↕ Why Can Heart Rate Vary?

Heart rate during activity can vary for many reasons. Training status, exercise type, environment, hydration, fatigue, measurement method, medications and individual physiology can all matter.

For that reason, an age-only calculation cannot account for every factor that may affect a person’s actual heart rate during exercise.

✓ How to Read the Result

Treat the calculated zones as a simple educational reference. For example, a displayed Zone 3 range means that those BPM values represent approximately 70% to 80% of the maximum heart rate estimated by the calculator’s 220 − age formula.

It does not mean that a particular person should necessarily exercise within that range.

⚠ Important Limitations

Health and fitness disclaimer: This calculator is for general informational and educational use only. It is not medical advice, medical clearance, a diagnosis, or an individualized exercise prescription. If you have health concerns, symptoms, take medication that can affect heart rate, or need guidance about safe exercise intensity, seek advice from an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.

? Heart Rate Zone FAQs

How does this heart rate zone calculator work?

It estimates maximum heart rate as 220 minus age and then calculates five ranges covering 50–60%, 60–70%, 70–80%, 80–90% and 90–100% of that estimate.

What is my estimated maximum heart rate?

In this calculator, estimated maximum heart rate is calculated as 220 minus your age. It is a general estimate rather than a measurement of your actual maximum heart rate.

Is 220 minus age accurate for everyone?

No. It is a simple age-based estimate, and actual maximum heart rate can differ between individuals.

What are the five zones used by this calculator?

Zone 1 is 50–60%, Zone 2 is 60–70%, Zone 3 is 70–80%, Zone 4 is 80–90%, and Zone 5 is 90–100% of the estimated maximum heart rate.

Why are my watch’s heart rate zones different?

A watch or fitness app may use a different maximum-heart-rate formula, different zone percentages, resting heart rate, measured data or personalized settings.

What does BPM mean?

BPM means beats per minute, a common way of expressing heart rate.

Can I use these zones as an exercise prescription?

No. The results are general estimates and are not an individualized exercise prescription or medical clearance. Appropriate exercise intensity can vary by person.

Can medications affect heart rate?

Some medications and health factors can affect heart rate. An age-only calculator does not account for these individual factors.

Is this heart rate zone calculator free?

Yes. ToolZippy provides this calculator for free and no account is required to perform the calculation.
