GPA Calculator
Calculate your weighted GPA using course grade points and credit hours. Add as many courses as you need and see your GPA, total credits and quality points instantly.
Calculate Your GPA
Enter each course, its grade-point value and credit hours. Courses with more credits have a larger effect on the calculated GPA.
How the GPA Calculator Works
A GPA calculator estimates your grade point average by combining the grade-point value earned in each course with the number of credits assigned to that course.
This matters because a four-credit course normally contributes more to a credit-weighted GPA than a one-credit course.
GPA Formula
First multiply the grade points for each course by its credit hours. Add those quality points together, then divide by the combined number of credits.
GPA Calculation Example
Suppose a student has three courses:
| Course | Grade Points | Credits | Quality Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mathematics | 4.0 | 3 | 12.0 |
| Science | 3.0 | 3 | 9.0 |
| English | 4.0 | 3 | 12.0 |
| Total | — | 9 | 33.0 |
Why Credit Hours Matter
If every course has the same number of credits, averaging the grade-point values gives the same result as a credit-weighted calculation.
When courses have different credit values, however, a simple average can give the wrong result.
A simple average of 4.0 and 3.0 would be 3.50, but the credit-weighted GPA is 3.67 because the 4.0 course carries twice as many credits.
Understanding the 4.0 GPA Scale
Many institutions use a 4.0-based GPA system, but the exact conversion from letter grades to grade points is determined by the institution.
A simplified example might look like this:
| Letter Grade | Example Grade Points |
|---|---|
| A | 4.0 |
| B | 3.0 |
| C | 2.0 |
| D | 1.0 |
| F | 0.0 |
This table is only a simple illustration. Some schools use values such as 3.7 for A−, 3.3 for B+, or other mappings. Honors, Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate or other weighted courses may also use values above 4.0.
Weighted vs Unweighted GPA
The word weighted can have more than one meaning in academic grading.
This ToolZippy calculator weights each entered grade-point value by the course’s credit hours. It does not automatically add bonus points for honors, AP, IB or advanced courses.
If your institution assigns a weighted grade-point value such as 4.5 or 5.0 for a particular course, you can enter that value directly.
Semester GPA vs Cumulative GPA
A semester GPA normally uses courses from one academic term. A cumulative GPA combines academic work across multiple terms according to the institution’s rules.
You can enter several courses into this calculator to estimate a credit-weighted result, but your official cumulative GPA may also depend on policies for repeated courses, withdrawals, transfer credits, pass/fail classes and grade replacement.
How to Add More Courses
Use the Add Course button to create additional rows. Each row can contain:
- An optional course name.
- The grade-point value for that course.
- The number of credits or credit hours.
You can remove a course using the × button beside its row. The calculator uses all valid course rows when calculating the result.
What Are Quality Points?
Quality points are the weighted points contributed by a course. They are calculated by multiplying the course’s grade-point value by its credits.
The calculator totals the quality points from all entered courses before dividing them by total credits.
Tips for a More Accurate GPA Estimate
- Use the exact grade-point values published by your school, college or university.
- Enter the correct credit hours for each individual course.
- Do not assume every institution uses the same 4.0 conversion.
- Check whether your institution treats repeated courses, withdrawals or pass/fail classes differently.
- If your school uses weighted advanced courses, enter the appropriate grade-point value according to its policy.
- Compare the calculator result with your institution’s official GPA calculation rules before using it for academic decisions.
Academic note: ToolZippy calculates the mathematical credit-weighted GPA from the grade points and credits you enter. It does not determine your school’s grading policy. Official GPA calculations can vary by institution, program and course type.
GPA Calculator FAQs
How do I calculate GPA using credit hours?
Multiply each course’s grade-point value by its credit hours, add all resulting quality points, and divide that total by the combined credit hours.
What are quality points?
Quality points are calculated by multiplying a course’s grade points by its credits. For example, a 4.0 grade in a three-credit course produces 12 quality points.
Does a higher-credit course affect GPA more?
Yes. In a credit-weighted GPA calculation, a course with more credits contributes more to the final GPA than a course with fewer credits.
Can I add more than two courses?
Yes. Use the Add Course button to add additional course rows. You can also remove courses you no longer want included.
Can I enter grades above 4.0?
Yes. The calculator accepts grade-point values above 4.0 for institutions that use weighted grading systems. Make sure the value matches your school’s official grading policy.
Is this an unweighted or weighted GPA calculator?
The calculator weights the grade-point value of each course by its credit hours. It does not automatically add honors, AP, IB or other advanced-course bonuses, but you can enter the weighted grade-point value assigned by your institution.
Can I calculate semester GPA?
Yes. Enter the courses and credits from one semester to estimate your credit-weighted semester GPA.
Can I calculate cumulative GPA?
You can enter courses from multiple terms to calculate their combined credit-weighted average. However, an institution’s official cumulative GPA may use additional rules for repeated courses, transfer credits, withdrawals or other academic records.
Does every school use the same 4.0 scale?
No. Grade-point conversions and weighting rules vary between institutions. Always check the grading scale published by your school, college or university.
Is the ToolZippy GPA Calculator free?
Yes. You can use the calculator without creating an account. The mathematical calculation is performed in your browser from the values you enter.
