Commission rate comparison
See how different rates affect your earnings at the sales amount entered above. Select a rate to apply it to the calculator.
Comparison amounts exclude base pay and assume a flat rate on all eligible sales.
How to Calculate Commission
A percentage-based sales commission is calculated by multiplying the sales amount by the commission rate expressed as a decimal.
For example, if sales are 5,000 and the commission rate is 5%:
The commission is therefore 250. If the salesperson also receives base pay, add that amount to the commission to estimate total earnings.
How to Use the Commission Calculator
- Enter the total sales amount used for the commission calculation.
- Enter the commission rate as a percentage, such as 5 for 5%.
- Enter base pay if it should be included in total earnings.
- Review the commission and total earnings displayed below the fields.
- Change any value to compare another sales or commission scenario.
The calculator does not assume a currency, so you can use the same currency consistently for sales amount, base pay and the displayed earnings.

Commission, Base Pay and Total Earnings
Commission With Base Pay Example
Suppose a salesperson has:
- Sales of 20,000
- A commission rate of 4%
- Base pay of 1,500

Then add the base pay:
Under this simplified example, total earnings would be 2,300.
Where Commission Calculations Are Used
- Sales compensation calculations.
- Retail and product sales commissions.
- Affiliate commission estimates.
- Real-estate commission examples.
- Freelance or referral arrangements.
- Bonus and incentive scenario planning.
- Comparing different sales targets and rates.
The actual amount payable can depend on the specific compensation agreement, eligible sales definition, returns, cancellations, thresholds, taxes, caps, deductions or other rules.
Flat Commission vs Tiered Commission
Flat percentage commission
A flat commission uses one percentage rate for the sales amount. For example, a 5% flat commission on 10,000 of eligible sales produces a commission of 500.
Tiered commission
Some compensation plans use different commission rates after certain sales thresholds are reached. For example, one rate may apply to the first portion of sales and another rate to sales above a target.
This calculator is designed for a single percentage rate. For a tiered commission plan, calculate each applicable tier separately according to the rules of the compensation plan.
Important Factors Before Using the Result
A commission formula can be mathematically simple while the real compensation agreement may be more detailed. Before treating the result as an amount actually payable, check:
- Which sales are eligible for commission.
- Whether the rate applies to revenue, profit or another amount.
- Whether returns or cancellations reduce commission.
- Whether the plan has thresholds, caps or tiered rates.
- Whether commission is calculated before or after discounts or fees.
- Whether taxes or deductions apply to final pay.
Important: This calculator performs a simplified percentage-based commission calculation. It does not determine contractual entitlement, payroll treatment, tax liability or the rules of a particular commission plan. Check the applicable compensation agreement and payroll records for actual payable amounts.
